There is an unending cultural exchange among countries.

It includes traditions, cultures

and especially on foods. The Korean food is recognized well as a healthy food for its scientific

and natural characteristics, which can harmonize every meat and vegetable. Also, it has a good

reputation for a nutrition balance and refined tastes (Park et al., 2009).

As the number of studies demonstrating the apparent health benefits of Korean cuisine

continues to grow, the resulting governmental efforts to promote Korean cuisine have also

increased. Also, the consumption ratio of pork is higher than other meat like beef or chicken with

competitive price, and pork can be applied for various cuisines and processed foods (Choi, 2009;

Kim et al., 2010).

One of the dishes that became popular is the well-known samgyeopsal or Korean pork

belly BBQ. Samgyeopsal or samgyeop-sal-gui or grilled pork belly is a type of gui (grilled dish)

in Korean cuisine. Its name means “three-layered flesh” which denotes the layers visible on the

meat. The meat is either marinated or seasoned, cooked on a grill at the diner's table. Usually,

diners grill the meat themselves after seasoning it and eat directly from a grill. It is typically

served with ssamjang, vegetables, and lettuce leaves to wrap it in (Argarin, 2021).

Batucan (2016) explained that many side dishes come with the samgyeopsal, which could

be paired while the meat is cooking. These side dishes vary from different restaurants, the

samgyeopsal is mainly paired with fresh lettuce, spinach, and other leafy vegetables, kimchi, pa

muchim or fresh scallion salad, onions, garlic, and green chili peppers.

Argarin (2021) also added that as samgyeopsal became popular in the Philippines, many

restaurants opened and offered this Korean dish. From time to time, Korean restaurants have

been popping left and right in different place in the country especially in Metro Manila. Despite
the strong spicy flavor and distinct smell, there is also a growing interest among Filipinos in

Korean food.

Price ranges from Php 150-200 and most of the restaurants serving samgyeopsal offer an

unlimited promo where customers can eat the said dish for 2 hours. With its delicious and unique

taste and people’s love of meat, samgyeopsal became a popular dish and was tried by everyone.
