Silicon and germanium are semiconductors with different atomic configurations and properties. Silicon has 14 protons and 14 electrons in its outer shell of 3s2 3p2, making it more stable and less sensitive than germanium. Germanium has 32 protons and 32 electrons filling its 3d orbital in the configuration 1s22s22p63s23p63d10 4s2 4p2. Due to its greater stability and lower cost, silicon is preferred over germanium for diodes.

Reason: Silicon is more abundant on earth’s as compared to germanium and therefore cheaper than germanium.
The main reason for silicon diode is preferred over germanium diode are that;
1. Si is less sensitive than Ge
2. Operation of Si is stable as compared to Ge with the changes of temperature 3. Si has less reverse current as compared to Ge. 4. Peak Inverse Voltage(PIV)rating of Si is much higher as compared to Ge. 5. Ge has d electrons but Si has no d electrons in its shell.
