1. the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) is an independent judicial body
established by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It has jurisdiction
over any dispute concerning the interpretation or application of the Convention, and over all
matters specifically provided for in any other agreement which confers jurisdiction on the
Tribunal. Disputes relating to the Convention may concern the delimitation of maritime zones,
navigation, conservation and management of the living resources of the sea, protection and
preservation of the marine environment and marine scientific research.
2. the International Seabed Authority

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) (French: Autorité internationale des fonds marins) is a

Kingston, Jamaica-based intergovernmental body of 167 member states and the European Union
established under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and its 1994
Agreement on Implementation. The ISA's dual mission is to authorize and control development
of mineral related operations in the international seabed considered the "common heritage of all
mankind" and also protect the ecosystem of the seabed, ocean floor and subsoil in "The Area"
beyond national jurisdiction. The ISA is to safeguard the international deep sea, the waters below
200 meters or 656 feet, where photosynthesis is hampered by inadequate light. Governing
approximately half of the total area of the world's oceans, the ISA is to exercise oversight of
activities that might threaten biological diversity and harm the marine environment. The
Authority operates as an autonomous international organization with its own Assembly, Council
and Secretariat.

3. the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf

Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf
(CLCS)

The purpose of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (the Commission or
CLCS) is to facilitate the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the
Sea (the Convention) in respect of the establishment of the outer limits of the continental shelf
beyond 200 nautical miles (M) from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is
measured. Under the Convention, the coastal State shall establish the outer limits of its
continental shelf where it extends beyond 200 M on the basis of the recommendation of the
Commission. The Commission shall make recommendations to coastal States on matters related
to the establishment of those limits; its recommendations and actions shall not prejudice matters
relating to the delimitation of boundaries between States with opposite or adjacent coasts.
