Benefits of trade unions

Some workers join a trade union because they believe that a union can:

 negotiate better pay

 negotiate better working conditions, like more holidays or improved health and safety
 provide training for new skills
 give general advice and support

Union members have the right to be accompanied to a discipline or grievance hearing by a trade union
representative (although trade unions are not compelled to provide this). All employees, regardless of
whether they are union members or not, are entitled to be accompanied by a work colleague.

 Grievance procedures
 Disciplinary procedures

Recognised unions also have rights to consultation where redundancies or a transfer of business are
proposed. There is a regular subscription cost for union membership and different rates may apply to
trainees and part-timers. Unions will not normally help with problems which pre-date membership.

 Employment protection during business transfers and takeovers

 Redundancy pay

Main purpose of trade unions

The typical activities of trade unions include providing assistance and services to their members,
collectively bargaining for better pay and conditions for all workers, working to improve the quality of
public services, political campaigning and industrial action.

Nearly seven million people in the UK belong to a trade union. Union members include nurses, school
meals staff, hospital cleaners, professional footballers, shop assistants, teaching assistants, bus drivers,
engineers and apprentices.

Most trade unions are independent of employers but have close working relationships with them.

What trade unions do

Unions train and organise workplace representatives who help union members with the problems they
face at work.

Reps provide support and advice and campaign for better conditions and pay.

Unions have brought significant changes to society, including:

 a national minimum wage;

 the abolition of child labour;

 improved worker safety;

 improving living standards by reducing the number of hours in the working week and
encouraging a healthy work/life balance;

 improved parental leave;

 equality legislation;

 better protection of migrant workers and a reduction in exploitation;

 minimum holiday and sickness entitlements.

Unions have also made thousands of local agreements on issues affecting individual workplaces
following consultation, negotiation and bargaining.

How trade unions work

Most unions are structured as a network of local branches with reps in every workplace.

Union reps:

 negotiate agreements with employers on pay and conditions;

 discuss major changes such as redundancy;

 discuss members’ concerns with employers;

 accompany members to disciplinary and grievance meetings;

 help members with legal and financial problems.

International Trade Law

Generally, international trade law includes the rules and customs governing trade between countries.
International trade lawyers may focus on applying domestic laws to international trade, and applying
treaty-based international law governing trade.

International trade law is the set of laws and agreements that govern commerce between countries.
International trade laws create the rules that countries and businesses must follow in order to do
business across borders. Lawyers who work in the field help create international agreements. They also
educate businesses about what they need to do in order to comply with rules and regulations for
international trade.
