Good morning everyone. My name is Loc and I’m an instructor at Saigon

swimming club. First of all, I would like to thank you all for attending my
presentation today.
As you may know that swimming is a healthy, low-cost activity that we
can continue throughout our life. So today’s topic is Swimming: a healthy
leisure activity. After this talk, you may gain some basic information
about swimming and the reasons why we should learn to swim.
Let’s look at the overview. First, I will provide you with some brief
information about swimming. Second, we will go through the benefits of
swimming. The last part is some general tips when we go swimming.
To begin with, what does swimming mean? Well, swimming is the
movement of the body through water using arms and legs. People can
swim in the sea, swimming pools, rivers, and lakes. People swim for
exercise, for fun, and as a sport. There are 4 styles of swimming: Front
crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly.
- Front crawl: Fastest and most efficient technique; also called freestyle,
because swimmers use it in freestyle events.
- Backstroke: Only stroke that is swum on the back with the swimmer
looking up; uses the same leg movements (flutter kick) as crawl.
- Breaststroke: One of the easiest and most relaxing strokes; competitive
swimmers find it difficult because it uses more energy when swimming at
a fast pace.
- Butterfly: Powerful and fast; relies on good technique; uses the dolphin
kick; the hardest and least popular stroke.
Sometimes equipment is used when swimming, and can include:
- Swimming suits
- Swimming goggles: help us see better underwater and protect our eyes
from irritation.
- Swimming caps: decrease the drag that comes with hair in water =>
increase speed
- Life jacket: help us float on the water
This is some information about swimming that I want to introduce to you.
Now, we move to the benefits of swimming. First, I would like to talk
about the health benefits that we can gain from swimming.
Swimming is a full-body workout that uses the muscles of the legs,
back, and arms in repetitive motions against the resistance of the water.
Swimming increases heart and lung capacity while improving
breath control. This has a positive effect on other workouts as swimming
improves stamina.
Swimming is excellent for a good stretch as well as keeping one’s
joints in good condition. This improves other aspects of physical
maintenance and fitness, like mobility, balance, and flexibility.
Spending time in the water helps build or rebuild muscle tone,
mobility, and coordination while remaining low-impact and supporting
joints.
In addition, there are also many other advantages that swimming
brings to us. It is a relaxing and peaceful form of exercise as it can
alleviate stress. Besides, swimming provides us with a pleasant way to
cool down on a hot day.
So, that is all about the benefits of swimming. Lastly, here are some
general tips that you should take when going swimming.
- First, make sure you know how to swim.
- Second, never swim alone: Always make sure someone watches you
when you swim - even adults.
- Third, choose a safe environment: Only swim in locations approved for
swimming.
- Last but not least, warm up and stretch your muscles and joints before
entering the water.
To sum up, I would like to remind you of some main points of today’s
presentation.
1. Swimming: there are 4 swimming styles.
2. Benefits of swimming: strengthen our health, especially heart and
lungs capacity.
3. Practical tips for swimming: only swim in a safe environment with the
