Boyz n the Hood (1991) Movie Review

Name: Jairus Thurman

Date: 10/9/22
Movie Title: Boyz n the Hood
Year: 1991
Genre: Crime, Drama
Main Characters: Cuba Gooding Jr., Laurence Fishburne, Hudhail Al-Amir
Summary: Tre has to move in with his Pops in Crenshaw because his Mom is having trouble
keeping him in line. Doughboy doesn’t get the same love at home as Tre does. Doughboy’s mom
favors her son Ricky more because she has a much less strained relationship with Ricky’s father.
This lack of attention causes Doughboy to act out and he gets locked up for it. When he comes
home, Tre is grown and Ricky is a star football player. Doughboy continues to look out for his
brother throughout the movie, but one incident over presumed colors is taken too far and is
ultimately what gets Ricky killed later in the movie.
The Good: This movie is a Black cult classic without a doubt. I don’t know anybody in my
family that doesn’t love this movie. We grew up with it. It showed us how quickly our world
could change just from being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most of all, the movie taught
us to never run straight in a high-pressure situation.
The Bad: There’s nothing bad about this movie. It’s real. There are traumatic elements to it, just
like there are in everyone’s life, but the movie doesn’t highlight them. Most of it is subtle, like
the favoritism toward Ricky or the street beef, but it isn’t the focal point of the movie by any
means.
