"They say I'm an orphan, maybe because I don't have my parents but I have someone who takes
care of me. They say parents are the first teacher of one's life but I have someone who teaches
me how to live a life. I have no sister, I have no brother but I have someone to play with me. I'm

Orphanage
An orphanage is a place to reside , devoted to
the care of orphans and children who were
separated from their biological families or in
common words orphanage is place where
those children are taken care of who have no
one in their life whom they can refer as
family no place to call as home no one who
can take care of them .

India is home
to 296 million
orphans
(2020)
5
Problems faced by orphans

A
Orphans never experience the love of their parents, grandparents or family.
B
They are sensitive to long-term psychological issues like depression, anger, anxiety, and negative feelings
and have a tendency to withdraw and isolate themselves.
C
As they are set back in the society after the age of 18, they suffer to survive in society and emphasize their
antisocial behavior, illegal conduct, and lack of confidence.
D
Many of them lack the support system and are unable to deal with their surroundings and lead a normal life.
6
SUPPORT

Orphans have nowhere to go and experience a society with

no one showing them any kind of affection or support. The
only thing that appeals to them is death, because they feel
so depressed, believing that it will solve all of their issues.
And because they are not being guided by any elders, they
end up engaging in certain improper activities to develop
their own identity and create a place for themselves in this 7
world.
8
Old age
home

An old age home is a shelter that is home to

the older and needy people who the family
has abandoned or can't look after them due
to some circumstances. there are nearly
138 million
elderly persons
in India among
which 16% are
residing old age
homes (2021) 9
Why are they left to old age homes?

A
It can be challenging for older people to adapt to their children's new circumstances when they
move from one state or country to another. This is because it is quite natural to adjust to an
experience that you have been unfamiliar with for virtually your entire life.
B
The tendency of nuclear families became prevalent as time passed on, and children began to
move away from their parents.
C
Additionally, there are instances where children would leave their parents behind and go to
another city, leaving them stranded. This happens because the younger generation refuses to get
along with the elder ones by treating them cruelly and meanly due to their physical limitations.
D
Many children leave their elderly' place to pursue education or for employment, leaving the
parents home alone, thus their primary concern will always be security. Children in these
situations feel the old aged homes as safe.
10
Problems faced by elderly people in
old age homes
A
The major challenges that elderly people in old aged homes experience are those related to personal and social adjustment;
they also struggle with despair, loneliness, economic insecurity, and getting to know one another.

B
When an elderly person is admitted into an old age home, he feels uncomfortable, the surroundings seem strange to him, and
the people around him are unfamiliar.

A person residing in an old age home had lesser chances to have contact with people than someone living with family, which
C

negatively impacted their social health.

D Due to all these reasons, there is arise in psychological problems, which becomes difficult to tackle with once increased to
large extent.
11
What if orphanage are combined with old age
homes?

A
Reduces psychological problems
B
Reduces the feeling of emptiness
C
Reduces the feeling of being unwanted
D
Acts as a support system for each other
E
Fulfills mutual emotional needs like love and care
F

MAHER ASHRAM(ORPHANAGE)
AND OLD AGE HOME AT SATARA
OBSERVATIONS AT ORPHANAGE
Children typically spend little time in one place and travel
from one to the next. According to observations, kids spend
the majority of their time outdoors. It is found that children
are happiest during the day, during vibrant festivals, and
when they are close to natural settings. They play with
neighboring flora and animals.

ELDERLY PEOPLE PREFERENCES

• Most of the elderly individuals preferred to spend their
free time in parks watching kids play nearby.
• A few elderly men liked playing indoor activities because
they enjoyed playing board games like carrom and
longed to play with young children.
• Compared to males, most elderly women chose to watch
children's television shows.
ARCHITECTURE
Form and volume are relatively simple, but the interior
courtyard is highly proportionate and gives the impression that
it is open to the surrounding area and nature. Different levels of
pergolas serve different purposes.

MATERIAL
The structure has an imposing appearance because of the
exposed brick work along the entire wall. Interesting mix of
primary and bright colors gives the design a very playful and
happy appearance.

The areas of this building have a positive relationship between children and older people. Children
have the chance to engage with adults and learn a lot. At the same time, children bring happiness and
tenderness into the lives of the elderly. Some of the tangible spaces were offices, health care center,
dining hall, kitchen, dormitories, anganwadi, etc. whereas intangible spaces like central courtyard,
terrace covered by pergolas which has a very interesting shadow pattern and is used for festivals.
LEARNING
• Complementary spaces in orphanage may include recreational areas for orphans where
elderly people can spent time. This will help elderly people to heal themself in a
psychological manner. Also children will enjoy the presence of elders and have a sense of
security and feel safe.
• Recreational areas will include play areas as well as extracurricular activities, where some
elderly people will themself teach the children, which will help elders to pass their time in a
proper manner and enjoy the life.
• Spaces with large openings will help to adapt with the surrounding environment and make
a large contact with surrounding community to integrate children with others.
• Children have a strong connection to nature. In these communities, the presence of nature
serves as a calming and caring factor that is crucial for the orphanage children's emotional
recovery. It is also observed as, stress levels are also lower for elders when in natural
surrounding.
AYUDHAM SOCIETY FOR OLD
AND INFANT, SATARA
ARCHITECTURE
• Form and volume of spaces are inter-relation & have a
pattern of open, semi-open & covered spaces.
• Some of the tangible spaces are Offices (admin wing),
Outpatient department, Meditation hall with library,
Dining hall & kitchen, Bedroom, Multipurpose hall, Living
room, Toddlers’ area, Computer lab
• Whereas intangible spaces are outdoor areas which are
used for various activities like outdoor dining, lawn for
assembly purpose.
LEARNING
• It is preferable to have a combined spaces for the two age groups, according to the study
performed in case studies and questionnaire surveys.
• The project consists of outdoor entertainment areas, indoor common areas, classrooms,
services, and landscaping.
• Both age groups and universal design concepts are taken into account when designing the
spaces.
• Some intangible spaces can be used as multi functional areas like meditation hall can also
be used as library, entrance pathway used as evening walkway, etc.; spaces which can also
be differentiated on the basis of activities carried out at different times.

AMSTERDAM ORPHANAGE
ABOUT
In 1954, the city of Amsterdam commissioned Van Eyck to design the municipal
orphanage. The orphanage was to be a residence of 125 youths, orphans or
children from Brocken families ranging in ages from 4 to 20, as well to house a
third of 30-40 staff members.
A cult building in the 1960's, Van Eyck's orphanage brought to the surface an
idiosyncratic interpretation of modern architectural ideas enriched by patterns
and shapes and by the balance of repetitive pavilions. It is composed of
innumerable interior and exterior spaces, which are interconnected in a complex
order an merge into each other almost imperceptibly.

SOS CHILDREN'S VILLAGE,
AQABA, JORDAN
ABOUT
This SOS complex for orphaned children is located in the residential outskirts of
the city of Aqaba, on the red sea. A prerequisite of SOS villages international is
that they should be built within an existing social environment, so that they are
not isolated from the urban context of the town or city they are in. The complex
comprises eight family houses, a staff house, an administration building, a guest
house and the village director's residence; all are planned around the village
square and connected via pedestrian paths, gardens and alleyways. Vaulted
archways lead to shaded courts, while garden surround the building both within
and on the edge of the village.
PLOT AREA- 5 ACRE
ARCHITECT- JAFAR TUKAN & PARTNERS
OPENING- 1991
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION
The village employs the traditional building style of the subtle coursing of random
granite boulders, but with the wooden tension members replaced by pre-cast
concrete. Mashrabiyyas filter the light of the harsh sun, and wind towers were
designed to draw the prevailing local breeze. Doors are painted in bright colors.
The massing of the project results in clusters of the houses and buildings around
shaded and breezy outdoor spaces for living and play, animated by lush vegetation
and shading trees.
