Do you know any of your neighbours?

It's time to read: neighbourhood

Do you know what a neighbourhood is? And what about the facts that make it a good place
to live?

Read the text below and check some things we can find in a good neighbourhood and
neighbours too.

Making your neighbourhood better

Illustration of a neighbourhood.

The neighbourhood is the basic building block of human civilization, whether in a big city, small town
or suburban community. It’s also the place where you can have the most influence in making a better
world. But do you know how to make your community more liveable and lovable?

These suggestions are focused on strengthening the sense of community and spirit of the commons
by providing people with ways to come together as friends, neighbours and citizens. That creates a
firm foundation that enables a neighbourhood to solve problems and seize opportunities.

• Give people a place to hang out.

• Give people something to see.

• Give people something to do.

2
• Give people a place to sit down.

• Give people a safe, comfortable place to walk.

• Give people a safe, comfortable place to bike.

• Give people reliable, comfortable public transportation.

• Make the streets safe.

• Remember the streets belong to everyone, not just drivers.

• Don’t forget about the needs of older neighbours.

• Don’t forget about the needs of kids.

• Let your community have pets.

• Reclaim front yards as social spaces – don’t fear density – people enjoy being around other people.

• Don’t give up hope – great changes are possible when neighbours get together.

• Build on what’s good in your community to make things even better.

• Remember the power of the commons: people working together for the benefit of everyone.

• Never underestimate the power of a shared meal to move people into action.

• Start with small steps – like planting flowers.

• Learn from other neighbourhoods in your town and around the world.

• Take the time to have fun and enjoy what’s already great about your neighbourhood.

Come to Brooklyn!

4
Come to Brooklyn!
There are many famous neighbourhoods. One of them is Brooklyn. Do you know this place?

Read the text below about this location and check what you can find there.

Picture of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Come to one of the best neighbourhoods in New York City (NYC)! Comfortable and large
houses, good prices, entertainment for the whole family, a lot of Green areas! Here's a
description of two of our nicest areas.

Park Slope

The residents of Park Slope, Brooklyn, are now hip, young families and a great number of
artists. On weekends, they all go to Prospect Park. Some people say this is a more successful

green area than the famous Central Park. Park Slope historic district is full of charming,
old residences. Gotham Avenue, the "other Fifth Avenue", is full of popular restaurants and
interesting shops. It is the kid-friendliest neighbourhood in Brooklyn and the best area for

families in all NYC. This place is not everyone's idea of a perfect neighbourhood, but
statistically speaking, there's nowhere better.

Williamsburg

5
Williamsburg is the focal point of Brooklyn. The neighbourhood has high rents and more
crowds than other neighbourhoods, but it's popular for a reason: the charming streets are
full of restaurants, rooftop bars and eclectic shops. On Summer weekends, lots of people go

to the waterfront for flea markets and giant food bazaars. The neighbourhood is full of
Green play spaces and cool live family entertainment. It is also the home of the McCarren
Park, a 35-acre area with playgrounds, sports fields and a newly renovated pool.

 Glossário
Crowds: a large group of people who have gathered together.

District: a particular area of a town or country.

Flea market: a market, usually taking place outside, where old or used goods are sold
cheaply.

Focal point: principal focus.

Hip: having or showing awareness of or involvement in the newest developments or styles.

Nicest: the superlative form of nice; most nice.

Rooftop: the outside surface of the roof of a building.

Where do you live?

Does the city you live provide these kinds of activities for the population?

What are the main touristic places to visit in your city and neighbourhood?

Language in usage
As we are talking about neighbourhood during this chapter, it is important to mention
what places we can find in it.

Observe the image below. It is a picture of Suzanne's neighbourhood. She also describes her

place in the following text.

Illustration of a neighbourhood.
shutterstock.com

10
Picture of a teenage girl (Suzanne).
shutterstock.com

My name is Suzanne and this is the neighbourhood I live in.

There are different houses, their structures are not alike at all.

There are some benches where I can sit with my friends and talk for hours. There is not
pollution in my neighbourhood because there are many trees.

I love my place, it is very clean and safe. There are recycling bins so there isn't any waste on
the streets.

Oh! And the streets are very bright during the night because many lamps provide lighting.

11
Explorando:
checking meanings
 PRÁTICA ATIVA

Questão 01

After reading about Suzanne's neighbourhood, answer true or false for the

questions below.

1.a)

We use there is for singular or uncountable nouns.

1.b)

We use there are for plural nouns.

1.c)

We use there is not to deny the existence of something.

There + to be

When we talk about places, and we want to indicate the existence or even the quantity of

something, we use the form there + to be.

It can be used in affirmative, interrogative and negative forms, and it follows a specific
structure. Read the table below:

Reprodução

Example 1:

There are many squares in this neighbourhood.

12
The verb to be agrees with the number and in this affirmative sentence I'm mentioning the
existence of squares in the neighbourhood.

Example 2:

There isn't a hospital near here.

In negative sentences I'm saying that something DOES NOT exist (the hospital). Negative
sentences are composed of not or the contraction isn't (singular).

Example 3:

Are there trees around here?

In interrogative sentences, the verb to be is placed in front of there.

Short answers

The (short) answers to the questions asked with the form there + to be also follow a
structure.

Read the table below and check it.

Reprodução

Example 1:

Is there a supermarket near here?

Yes, there is./ No, there isn't.

Again, the verb agrees with the number.

Example 2:

Are there interesting places to go in this neighbourhood?

Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.

The verb agrees with the number, in this case, plural.

13
Importante: singular and plural

Remember that the form there + to be changes according to the number, being used

in the singular (there is) and in the plural (there are). In the singular, contraction is
common. In that case, instead of "There is a shopping mall", "There's a shopping mall"
is written.

There is/are × Have

It is very common to confuse the correct use of have/has and there is/are. Let's check the
difference between them and understand when we have to use one or another.

There + to be = "haver".

Example:

There are a lot of people living in this neighbourhood.

When we use there + to be, we are stating the existence of something or someone.

Have = possuir.

Example:

I have a house and a car.

When we use the verb to have, we are indicating possession of something.

words in bold.

This is the neighbourhood where I live.

My house is on Cambridge Avenue and there are many similar houses next to mine, we are
neighbours.

My house is the one in the middle: the green and brown one. It is located between the purple

and yellow, and blue and light pink houses.

There is a very colourful balloon above that yellow and brown house. Also, there are some
trees behind this house too.

In front of these houses we can see the avenue with many cars.
