Vocabulary

People are different, we don't have the same characteristics: physical or psychological.

Take a look at the images and note the different physical traits we can have and the

vocabulary we use.

Have or has

If we want to say we have something like a hair or eye colour or style of hair, it is
necessary to use the verb have.

Use have with the pronouns I/you/they/we.

Example 1:

They have brown eyes.

Example 2:

I have straight hair.

Use has with the pronouns he/she.

Example 1:

She has curly hair.

Example 2:

He has green eyes.

Clothes and accessories


It is possible to identify a person with physical traits and also with clothes and accessories.
But, first, let's get to know some of these words.

When we describe people's characteristics, it is important to use specific vocabulary and
structures.

Verb to be

After analysing some sentences, it is possible to understand that the verb be is used for:
introducing yourself or someone, nationality, age, and characteristics.

Observe the table below and see how we can use this verb with different pronouns and

forms: interrogative, affirmative, and negative.

Example 1:

She is thirteen years old.

She is not (isn't) thirteen years old.

Is she thirteen years old? No, she isn't.

Example 2:

They are my friends.

They are not (aren't) my friends.

Are they my friends? Yes, they are.

Example 3:

I am tall.

I am not (I'm not) tall.

Am I tall?

Importante: contractions

The contraction is not used in short affirmative answers. Additional words are

necessary.

Example 1:

– Is she American?

– Yes, she is. / Yes, she's American.

Example 2:

– Are you a good friend?

– Yes, I am. / Yes, I'm a good friend.

When we want to ask about someone's origin, we also use the verb be.

This verb is used to give different personal information. Observe the following dialogue.

Where are you from?

The verb be is used to give information such as origin: city, country.

The structure used is: where + to be + subject + from?

Observe that it is possible to answer this question mentioning the nationality or not.

Example 1:

In this example, the preposition from is used because the nationality is not mentioned.

Example 2:

– Where are they from?

– They are Canadian.

In this example, the preposition from is not used because the nationality is mentioned.

Countries and nationalities

Observe in the following table some examples of countries and their nationalities.

Nationalities and countries in English are capitalized.

Example: I am Spanish. / I am from Spain.

• We can use the verb to be in English to ask questions related to friendship and also to
identify people with information related to nationality and countries. How to use the
question Where are you from? and how to answer it using the country you are from,
the city or the nationality.

• The vocabulary used to describe physical characteristics, such as the colour of the
hair, eyes, hairstyle and physical type. When we want to talk about body
characteristics, for example, the colour of the eyes and hair, we have to use the verb
form have (pronouns I, you, they, we) or has (pronouns he, she, it). Vocabulary
related to clothes and accessories.
