Meteoroids
What is a meteoroid?: A meteoroid is a heavenly body wandering around
outer space. Most meteoroids consist of iron and nickel. They are categorized as
iron, stone and stony-iron.

The word meteor comes from the Greek word


‘meteōros’, which means high in the air. Some
people call a meteor a shooting star of a falling
star.

When many meteors appear from the same point,


this phenomenon is called a ‘meteor shower’

Meteors and Meteorites


Meteoroids – Are debris of asteroids or comets that directly orbit the sun.

Meteors – When a meteoroid enters the earth’s atmosphere, it starts burning due to
atmospheric friction. The its glowing streak of light is called ‘meteor’.

Meteorites – Sometimes meteors don’t burn totally in the atmosphere and some
remaining parts land on the earth. These remaining parts is known as ‘meteorites.

Types of Meteorites
1.
Iron–Meteorites : They are almost
completely made of metal.

2.
Stony-Iron Meteorites : They have
nearly equal amounts of metal and silicate
crystals.

3.
Stony-Meteorites :
It mostly has silicate minerals.
