PECHAY (Brassica rapacious Subsp. chinensis)

INTRODUCTION

ZENAIDA C. GONZAGA, OTHELLO CAPUNO, MARINA LABONITE, and EUGENIA

LONZAGA

Agriculture is one of the most significant industries in any country, particularly in the

Philippines. leafy vegetable in the Philippines and contributes a very good income provider for

farmers due to its short duration harvesting. This crop can be harvested 30-45 days from planting

( Seedling foundation of this crop strongly Siemonsma & Piluek 1994) affects performance as it

contributes to almost half of the duration in cropping. Most vegetable crop are highly influenced

on how the seedlings are produced. Many farmers in the southern Philippines used direct

seeding in planting pechay. However, farmers often encountered problems on germination due

to the small size seeds which made them prone to be washed out during heavy rains. Seedlings

too are easily damaged by insect pest and diseases. The knowledge on seedling technology are

not yet disseminated such that meticulous farmers lack evidence to change from their comfort

zone of practice which are ineffective. Among the mentioned method of raising seedlings,

no study was conducted in southern Philippines as basis for better performance of the crop in

each province. Protected cropping on vegetable production was believed to be economically

feasible and results of research in Visayas State University on open field cultivation showed

negative correlation of rainfall and vegetable productivity (Gonzaga et al 2013, Capuno et al

2015). Some parts of southern Philippines doesn't have the technology of protected
cropping such as Bohol and Samar. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of

pechay in the three provinces grown in protected cropping and open field.

METHODOLOGY

Method of planting growing and harvesting pechay plants.

He started the container planting preparation on October 20, 2022. During that time of

preparation, He preferred to use a container instead of plotting. He used a Wilkins bottle (6

litters) for the container and snipped the top of the bottle with appropriate drainage holes so that

the water can drain and the plant won't be overwatered. I started to take soil from our yard and

put it in the container I made.

On October 19, 2022, that is when he put pechay seeds in the homemade seedling tray. Because

pechay seeds require sunshine to germinate, he placed them in the light for 30 minutes to an hour

per day using a homemade seedling tray. To sprout and to thrive, lettuce seeds and seedlings

require a lot of sunshine. Make sure to utilize a grow light indoors.

On October 24, 2022, he started I began transplanting after seeing the pechay seed leaves

emerge. I transplanted them cautiously because they were still quite thin and would perish

rapidly. When I put it in its container, I watered it and moved it to a sunny place so that it grows

quickly.

On October 26, 2022, It’ starting to develop, but its true leaves haven't emerged yet, so I'm just

watering it and putting it in a sunny spot because its true leaves will emerge faster if it is

constantly exposed to sunshine.

On October 31, 2022, he observed the plant because it rained last night but nothing bad happened

to it so I put it in a place where it doesn't rain.

On November 5, 2022, he pechay seedlings develop their first true leaves. I observed that it was

rising, so I grabbed a measuring tool and recorded its height for record-keeping.

Continual doing this every four to five days until the pechay receives 3 to 5 hours of sunlight.

Because leafy plants like lettuce benefit from additional nitrogen, she must fertilize the plant

every other day. Fertilizer aids in keeping plants healthy by helping the leaves grow larger and

warding off bitterness. Watch out for weeds and remove them by hand if necessary, but take care

not to harm the pechay plants' delicate roots.

On December 14, 2022, The pechay plant developed to an average height of 12 to 13.5 cm, with

8 to 11 leaves per leaf. I simply kept watering it and set it outside so that it could receive

nutrients from the sun and can reach its maturity.

On December 20, 2022, It’s the last day of monitoring, he got 6 mature pechay with 10 to 12

leaves and a height of 14 to 16 cm tall. His planting period lasted 62 days, from October 19,

2022, to the harvest on December 20, 2022. When harvesting, harvest the entire head by cutting

it off an inch or two above the ground. Last but not least, wash the leaves to remove any dirt

before eating. Dry thoroughly and place in a proper container in the refrigerator. They are best

when eaten right away, although the fridge can hold them for up to a week.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

This plant must be planted within the proper season; else, planting it will be challenging. Pechay

should be planted in the summer for accelerated growth. Water immediately after it dries. Don't

wait till it is completely dry before watering the plants. Just keep the soil moist until sprouts

appear. Don't forget to provide it with adequate sunshine since when you water your plant, it also

has to be able to absorb enough water so that it doesn't drown. Know which insects can hurt your

plants. Place it where it will grow properly and healthily by planting it there. I can only advise
them to take good care of their plants to make them appear more appealing and manageable. The

goal is to make it possible for the date grower to organize and plan the implementation process in

advance, ensuring the date plantation's effective establishment. Planning is a crucial component

of the initial step of preparation and will limit unneeded delays during the implementation phase.

CONCLUTION:

You will gain a lot of useful knowledge from planting. Food gardening is essential since it

makes it simpler to consume more fresh vegetables. You have control over the fertilizers and

pesticides that are applied to your food, as well as when it is harvested. Garden-ripened produce

has more nutrients compared to some store-bought vegetables that need to be picked early. Even

though we live in a world where everything happens instantly, there is joy and sense of success

in seeing things develop. Bringing nature inside as the seasons change and we spend more time
indoors is a great approach to profit from interacting with people outside of one's own

environment. Crop science helps us by ensuring the successful development of future crops

while utilizing the knowledge in a way to efficiently run agricultural operations. I planted,

harvested, and I believe this activity advances both my skill set and my interest in agriculture.
