Mu Alpha Theta
Honor Society
National High School Mathematics Honor Society

Dear Student:

You have been identified as a potential candidate to join the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society at Quantico
Middle High School. The Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society organization was formed in our school for the
purposes of fostering interest, developing strong scholarship, and promoting the enjoyment of
mathematics. The society is officially a National High School and a Two-Year College Mathematics
Honor Society that was formed in 1957 and thus we will follow the general guidelines already set.
However, we will, as a Chapter, make independent regulations and activities.
To Join the Society:
Students must go through an application process. Students must be eligible to apply to the society. The
requirements are as follows:
⚫ Student must have completed 2 years of high school math (Algebra 1 and Geometry) and be
currently enrolled in a third high school math course (Algebra 2 or above)
⚫ Note that if taking high school math courses during middle school would allow you to meet this
requirement.
⚫ Student must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and an overall math GPA of 3.5
Membership:
Students who are accepted into the QMHS Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta will be required to remain in
academic good standing and provide service to others and the chapter. Mu Alpha Theta is an HONOR
society and therefore all members are expected to maintain an honorable character at all times. ANY
honor-related offense will be grounds for immediate dismissal. Members are expected to participate in
the activities of the chapter and uphold the philosophy of the society. These activities include, but are
not limited to:
❖ Attendance at monthly meetings
▪ Members must attend all meetings. Two unexcused absences may result in exclusion from
the society. If you will not be able to attend a meeting you must contact the advisors at least
24 hours in advance.

❖ Service Hours
▪ Members must fill 10 service hours per school year. At least 5 of the hours must be peer
tutoring hours. Service hours must support the organization or mathematics in some way.
Hours must be approved and signed off on by Mu Alpha Theta Sponsor. Hours may not
overlap with other service hours for which you are getting credit.

❖ Dues
▪ Yearly Mu Alpha Theta membership fee of $25. Checks need to be made out to Quantico
Middle High School and have “Mu Alpha Theta” written in the memo line of the check. Do
not turn in checks until you have been accepted into the organization.

❖ Special Activities
▪ QMHS Math Tutoring
▪ Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Contest Competitions
▪ Pi Day Activities
▪ Math Education Month (April)
▪ Other activities to be decided upon by the club membership.

Procedures:

o Complete the application form and return to Mr. Rios via electronic mail to luis.rios@dodea.edu
no later than 12:00 PM on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. Do not turn in a check for dues until you
find out if you have been accepted.

o A team of QMHS teachers will review applications and students will be notified of their
acceptance or non-acceptance into the Honor Society in writing by Friday, March 19, 2021.

o Criterion for acceptance include the following:

contributions you can make to the organization and what your expectations for the future are
