Safety instructions

The relevant safety at work and accident prevention regulations, plus operating instructions,
shall apply for operating the tower. The tower has been constructed in accordance with the
generally recognized rules of engineering. It complies with the requirements of directive
2014/68/EU concerning pressure equipment.

Ensure that installation complies with local laws for operation and routine testing of
pressure equipment at the place of installation.

Operator/user of the tower should make himself familiar with the function, installation and
start-up of the unit. All the safety information is always intended to ensure your personal
safety.

• Do not exceed max. operating pressure or operating temperature range (see data
label).
• The permissible working temperatures and pressures for ad-on parts and tower
elements are given under Technical data for those ad-ons. Maximum temperature
and pressure for assembled system is the lowest of any individual part.
• It is necessary to ensure that the unit is equipped with the corresponding safety and
test devices to prevent the permissible operating parameters from being exceeded.
• Tower has been designed for a primarily static pressure. Rapid changes of pressure
are not allowed.
• Ensure that the tower is not subject to vibrations that could cause fatigue fractures.
• Tower is not to be subjected to mechanical stresses.
• The medium used may not have any corrosive components that could attack the
materials of the tower in a way that is not permitted. Do not use the adsorber in
hazardous areas with potentially explosive atmospheres.

4
TAC - Installation and operating manual

• All installation and maintenance work on the tower may only be carried out by
trained and experienced specialists.
• It is forbidden to carry out any kind of work on the tower and piping, including
welding and constructional changes, etc.
• A pressure gauge, which shows the operational pressure, must be installed in the
unit, respectively in the pipeline.
• Depressurize the system before carrying out the installation work. The unit must be
installed vertically in the piping.
• Ensure that tower is installed without any stresses.
• Use original spare parts only.
• Use the device for appropriate purpose only.

Appropriate use

TAC series adsorbers are designed for high efficient removal of oil vapours from
compressed air and vacuum systems. This appliance must be used only for the
purpose for which it was specifically designed. All other uses are to be considered
incorrect and will void warranty.

Specifically:

❑ tower can only be used for “GROUPE 2” fluids (PED 2014/68/EU).

❑ tower cannot be used for explosive, toxic, flammable, corrosive and “GROUPE 1”
fluids (PED 2014/68/EU).

Warning: internal corrosion can seriously reduce the safety of installation: check it during
changing the activated carbon.

The manufacturer will under no circumstances be responsible for any damage resulting from
improper, incorrect or unreasonable use.

Use genuine spare parts only. Any damage or malfunction caused by the use of ungenuine
parts is not covered by Warranty or Product Liability.

5
Installation

Place the tower on suitable straight surface or pedestal. If needed or requested, fix it with
screws through holes in tower’s legs.

Before first operation!!!

Because of filling and transportation there can be more dust in the tower. For first operation
use old downstream filter element (or, if system allow, without outlet pipe connection) to
remove the dust.

Commissioning

PRESSURIZATION
Rapid pressurization can cause damage to the activated carbon tower! Activated carbon
tower should be pressurised extremely slowly through an appropriate valve at the inlet.
During the pressurisation process the outlet valve should remain closed and the adsorption
dryer should not be operational.
20191219

6
TAC - Installation and operating manual

Follow the pressurisation procedure:

• Make certain that the outlet valve is closed.

• Open the inlet valve slightly until you hear first flow noise.
• Wait until you no longer hear flow noise.
• Fully open the inlet valve and wait until the tower manometer indicates that tower is
pressurised to the operating pressure.

OPENING OUTLET VALVE

Opening of the outlet valve should be done extremely slowly especially when the system
downstream of the valve is not pressurized.

Follow the procedure:

• Open the outlet valve slightly until you hear first flow noise.
• Wait until you no longer hear flow noise.
• Fully open the outlet valve.

Oil indicator

Oil indicator show, how much is activated carbon saturated with oil.

7
OIL INDICATOR – MEASURMENT PROCEDURE
• Open the needle valve to start measuring the amount of oil in air. Once the needle
valve of the indicator has been opened, it should be exposed for some time, to get
best results. Record exposure time and average pressure.
• After use close the needle valve. At the time of new test, the cartridge must be
replaced with the new one (before replacing makes sure that the needle valve is fully
closed).
• If oil is presented in air, it will color a white material in the tube. The rate of color
travel will be proportional to the amount of oil presented. For converting oil indicator
value to parts per million values use the conversion graph below.

In humid air, moisture may wash traces of dye up the tube, creating a light pink area
above the dark red area. When calculating oil entrainment, measure only to the top of
the dark red column.

HOW TO DETERMINE OIL CONCENTRATION FROM GRAPH

1. If color travel is 1 unit at the final reading time, find the Total Hours on the right side
of the conversion chart and the Pressure on the bottom of the chart. The point
where Hours and Pressure intersect is the parts per million of oil concentration.
2. If the final reading occurs at other than 1 unit of color travel, divide the units traveled
by the total hours to find the Rate of Color Travel.
3. Find the Rate of Color Travel on the left side of the conversion chart and the Pressure
on the bottom of the chart. The point where Rate and Pressure intersect is the parts
per million of oil concentration.

20191219

8
TAC - Installation and operating manual

For any Rate of Color Travel above 0.24 units/h, the measured rate should be divided by any
factor which will bring it into the range of the graph. This number should then be used to
determine the oil concentration (PPM). This concentration must then be multiplied by the
same factor used previously to determine the actual oil concentration.

Example: The Rate of Travel on the high pressure side of a pressure reducing valve (80 PSIG
[560 kPa]) is found to be 0.5 units/hr. Divide this rate by five (0.5 ÷ 5 = 0.1 units/h) to bring it
into the range of the conversion graph. Locate this new rate on the chart, showing a
concentration of 1.4 PPM. Multiply this concentration by the previous factor (1.4 × 5 = 7.0
PPM) to obtain the actual oil concentration in the air being tested.

9
Maintenance

• Replace activated carbon every 12 months or sooner if required (activated carbon

could be vacuumed trough upper hole or released from lower hole). Check residual
oil content with oil indicator monthly.
• Damaged components are to be replaced by new ones. If a marked degree of
damage is found, the entire tower is to be replaced.
• Tower has been designed for a life of 10 years in normal operating environment.
After 10 years periodical checks of tower integrity are strongly recommended for
safe operation.
• Carry out a check for leaks once the maintenance work has been finished.

Before maintenance depressurize the system!

Warranty exclusion

The guarantee shall be void if:

• The operating instructions were not followed with respect to initial commissioning
and maintenance.
• The unit was not operated properly and appropriately.
• The unit was operated when it was clearly defective.
• Non-original spare parts or replacement parts were used.
• The unit was not operated within the permissible technical parameters.
• Unauthorised constructional changes were made to the unit or if parts of the unit
that may not be opened were dismantled.
