Warm-Up Word Hunt

Explain to the children that they need to find 15 words hidden around their
learning environment. Challenge them to find the Word Hunt cards and
read the different ‘ai’, ‘ay’ and ‘a-e’ words as quickly as possible. Ensure they
sound and blend each word aloud to enable you to assess their abilities.
Recap any words that the children found difficult.
Can the children speedily and accurately read real and nonsense words
containing ‘ai’, ‘ay’ and ‘a-e’?

Input All About ‘igh’ and ‘ie’

Use the ‘igh’ and ‘ie’ Sound Poster to introduce the graphemes and discuss how
they both make the same sound. Remind the children that ‘ie’ is a digraph and
‘igh’ is trigraph, explaining that the two or three letters work together to make one
sound. Model saying the ‘igh’ sound aloud. Ensure your pronunciation is clear
and it is a pure sound. Ask the children to repeat the sound back to you until you
are happy they are confident and clear in their sound production.
Give each child a lolly stick and lay the sound pegs out across the table.
Model selecting and adding pegs to the lolly sticks to create a word, such
as: n-igh-t. Sound out and blend the word aloud to see if you have a created
a real or nonsense word. Allow lots of time for children to explore different
combinations, sounding out and blending each created word aloud.
Are the children able to build and read words using ‘igh’ and ‘ie’?

Apply ‘igh’ and ‘ie’ Riddles

Give each child an ‘igh’ and ‘ie’ Riddles sheet. Children to read each riddle
carefully aloud. Allow them time to identify the answer from a bank of words
at the bottom of the page. Check the answers and discuss any errors.
Can the children accurately read and understand words containing ‘igh’ and ‘ie’?

Assess & Review Lily Pad Leap

Lay out the Lily Pad Leap cards on the floor. Model reading some of the
words on the lily pads and encourage children to say the sounds aloud. The
aim is to ‘cross the pond’ by identifying and stepping on only the words that
contain ‘igh’ or ‘ie’. Allow children time to complete their own path across the
lily pads. Remind them only to step on the ‘igh’ or ‘ie’ words.
Can the children independently identify and read words containing ‘igh’ and ‘ie’?
