MIN: 201 Kinematics of Machines
Tutorial No. 5: CAMS

1. Give a classification of cams along with their diagrams.

2. A cam that is designed for cycloidal motion drives a flat-faced follower. During the rise, the follower
displaces 1 in for 180° of cam rotation. If the cam angular velocity is constant at 100 rpm, determine
the displacement, velocity, and acceleration of the follower at a cam angle of 60°.
3. A constant-velocity cam is designed for simple harmonic motion. If the flat-faced follower displaces
2 in for 180° of cam rotation and the cam angular velocity is 100 rpm, determine the displacement,
velocity, and acceleration when the cam angle is 45°.
4. Construct the displacement diagram for the follower that rises 40mm from 0 to 180 degree with
modified constant velocity, dwells from 160 to 180 degree and falls from 180 to360 degree, with
modified constant velocity. Make the center one third of the follower travel constant velocity and
modify the end thirds.
5. Layout the cam for the displacement diagram problem (4) using the following specifications: Base
circle diameter is 100 mm, the rotation is counterclockwise and the follower is an inline roller
follower with 12 mm diameter roller.
6. Layout the cam in problem (5) except offset the roller 15mm to the right.
7. Layout the cam in problem (5) using a flat faced inline follower.
8. Construct the displacement diagram of a follower having the following motion: rise 30mm from 0 to
150 degree with constant acceleration, dwell 150 to 200 degree, fall from 200 to 360 degree with
constant acceleration.
9. Construct the displacement diagram for the follower with SHM. The follower rises 3 cm from 0 to
120 degree, dwells from 120 to 170 degree, falls 3 cm from 170 to 310 degree and dwells from 310 to
360 degree.
10. Construct the displacement diagram for the follower having following motion: rise 35 mm from 0
to 150 degree with a cycloidal motion, dwells 150 to 185 degree and falls from 185 to 360 degree
with cycloidal motion.
