Depression Affecting Teens Due to the Academics

Depression is a state of mental illness. It is characterized by deep, long-

lasting feelings of sadness or despair. We can also prevent depression by regular
exercise, it helps create positive feeling.

Depression is a serious and common medical illness that affects most teenagers.
According to the data retrieved from the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health it
shows that about 3.2 percent of children from ages 3 to 17 has been diagnosed with
depression. According to National Institute of Mental Health, 3.2 million adolescents
aged 12 to 17 experienced a serious depressive episode in 2017. In recent years,
the prevalence of severe major depression has climbed to 9.7%, according to a 2021
Mental Health America (MHA) report. It rises to 9.2% in 2020. As young children
transition into their teen years, the prevalence of depression diagnoses tends to rise.

Depression has been affecting more teenagers in the recent years. One of the
reasons for this is due to academics. Students feel pressured to get high grades
because parents hold their children to very high expectations in order to prove that
they are smart or skilled. Students feel scared that without good grades they will not
be able to get into a good college and have a good job.

With this study, the researchers aim to learn how to help teenagers on how to deal
with academic stress, and hopefully, reduce the chances of developing depression.

It’s important to realize that feeling down at times is a normal part of life. Sad and
upsetting events happen to everyone. But if you’re feeling down or hopeless on a
regular basis, you could be dealing with depression.

Depression is considered a severe medical condition that can get worse without
proper treatment.
