Office Hours: MTWRF 11:00 am - 12:00 pm ET-USA – or by Zoom appointment

Objectives

To have students be able to:

• Use classical analysis techniques on statically determinate and indeterminate structural
systems to:
o Determine support reactions
o Determine internal member forces
o Determine structural displacements.
• Become familiarized general structural behavior

Prerequisites:
CE 2060, Structural Mechanics (C or better for CE majors) or Approval of Instructor

Required Text:

Nielson / McCormac, Structural Analysis Understanding Behavior, John Wiley & Sons, 2017

Professional Component: The whole course is related to the professional design practice of
structural engineering in which engineers must understand the structural systems and their
behavior. They must determine or calculate design loads and perform analysis before they can
design the structures with any type of material. This course focuses on the understanding of simple
structural systems without emphasizing the use of computer techniques.
The course acts a link between basic engineering science courses, such as statics and structural
mechanics and detailed design courses using steel, concrete, masonry and wood. It also acts as a
foundation for the structural component of the capstone design course.

This course pertains to the following Civil Engineering Program Outcomes:

• [1.] An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by
applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
• [2.] An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified
needs with consideration of public health, safety and welfare, as well as global,
cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors;
• [6.] An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and
interpret data and use engineering judgement to draw conclusion.

Exams:

Due to the Covid19 situation all exams will be administered through a scheduled Zoom
meeting.

The mid-term exams (#1 & #2) will be Monday, July 18th and Wednesday July 27th from
1:00 to 3:00 pm (Eastern Time Zone-USA). The final exam will be Friday, August 5th from
1:00 to 3:30 pm (Eastern Time Zone-USA). You must be connected to a Zoom meeting
during the entire time you are taking the exam. You must be visible to me through your
webcam. This will allow me to act as a proctor for you similar to sitting in a classroom. You
must take the exams at these times. If you are unable to do this you should drop the course.

You must log-in the Zoom meeting. You can print the exam, then work it and scan and
upload the finished pdf of the test to the Canvas site by deadline for completion. Optionally
you could work the exam on engineering paper.

You will not be allowed to bring any resources into the exam except your writing implements
and calculator. When relevant, any charts required for the exam and any additional paper
required will be provided with the exam.

Attendance Policy – Lecture Material

There is no on-campus requirement for this course. All students will be expected to watch all
lecture videos posted under the modules tab and take notes on these videos. To assist in this, a
PDF document for each lecture of the semester has been provided. You will then need to take
notes on the slides themselves as required. I would recommend that you get a 3-ring binder to
store each set of PDF lecture notes.

Office Hours

Office hours for this course will be held on Monday through Friday from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm
(Eastern Time Zone–USA. Any deviation from this schedule will be communicated via email.
Students will also be able to communicate by phone, calling my office phone (864) 656-3317.

If you cannot make it to office hours, then you may send your queries via email or may schedule
a call or an Zoom visit. Emails to the instructor will be viewed and addressed during normal
business hours (i.e. 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Monday-Friday E.D.T.). Any emails sent outside of
normal business hours will be addressed within 24 hours of when the email was sent except for
weekends. Prompt responses to emails sent after 4:30 pm should not be expected.

The Honor Code

Each student must comply with the Honor Code as approved by The College of Engineering,
Computing and Applied Science (CECAS). You are expected to be familiar with the Honor Code
and to abide by it in all aspects of the class. Copies of the Honor Code may be obtained from
https://www.clemson.edu/cecas/current-students/honor-code.html. In compliance with the Honor
Code, the students are not to copy homework from each other or solutions manual. All exams
must be taken within the specified amount of time and only with the designated approved
resources. However, studying and working homework problems together is encouraged and is
not seen as a violation of the Honor Code.
Academic Integrity

The following is the University official statement on Academic integrity. “As members of
Clemson university community, we have inherited Thomas Green Clemson’s vision of this
institution as a ‘high seminary of learning.’ Fundamental to this vision is a mutual commitment
to truthfulness, honor, and responsibility, without which we cannot earn the trust and respect of
others. Furthermore, we recognize that academic dishonesty detracts from the value of a
Clemson degree. Therefore, we shall not tolerate lying, cheating, or stealing in any form.”
