INDEX OF EGYPTIAN ADMINISTRATIVE AND RELIGIOUS TITLES OF THE MIDDLE KINGDOM With a Glossary of Words and Phrases Used by WILLIAM A. WARD AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF BEIRUT Index of Egyptian Administrative 4nd Religious Titles of the Middle Kingdom ‘by Wiliam A. Ward First published in 1982 by the ‘American University of Beirut ©1982 All ights reserved Printed in Beirut, Lebanon One search for evidence, To bs sure, ue possess many basic reference the frustrations of Esyptology is the time-consuming uorks uhich make this search easier, but meny more are needed, The study of the social and political structure of the Middle Kingdom, for example, depends heavily on administrative titles, a situation clearly illustrated by the number of studies on individual titles which have appeared in the literature, Yet, those who wish to examine this sudject must spend countless hours uith museum catalogues, excavation reports and innumerable studies of inscribed objects in order te assemble adequate meterial. Thet there is @ wealth of meteriel is amply shoun by Martin's indis~ pensable collection of Middle Kingcam scarabs with titles and the numerous museum collections of grivate stelae of the period. The present uork grew out cf my oun endless search for individual titles and the rea on thet my colleagues faced the et the material assembled here is same problem, I readily admit incomplete, based as it is on the limited research facilities available to me in Beirut, There are Middle Kingdom monuments I have not seen and there are discussions of titles and individual words uhich have been unintentionally omitted, But no reference uork is ever finished and, while I am avare of its imperfections, T hope that in spite of them this Index will prove to be of some use. I would Like to express my appreciation to the followin: to the University Publications Committee of the American Univer= sity of Beirut for accepting this volume for publication; to the Research Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the sane institution for granting funds te obtain material not available in Beirut; to Mr, Devid Warburton for his perserverance in el; to Prof, Harry S, Smith of is material in a! collecting t vie University College London for his warm encouragement. My wife, to whom this volume is dedice-ed, deserves special thanks for her constant interest in my work and for creating an oasis of calm in the desert of chaos that is present-day Lebanon, Without her strength and companionship, this and other works would not have been written, American University of Ssirut 30 March, 1982 CONTENTS Preface v Contents vii Abbreviations ix Introduction 1 Notes to Introduction 3 Note: Transliteration of the Genitive Particle 4 Part One: index of Titles 5 Part Tuo: Glossary 187 220 Addendum - ix - ABBREVIATIONS Abydos Ill: C, T. As a generel rule, I have tended to retain questionable examples rather than onit then, : Photoaraohs and facsimiles of tha ~snumenta concerned have | been consultes wherever possible, In those cases where photo= graphs or facsimiles were not available, T have had to rely on the iy feu.! individual entries give translation, references publication, Such instances are for-un Part One is the Index proper, 7 ptian spelling, transliteration the to where the title aprears and referen s to where it is discussed, Every effort has been made to eliminate cuplicate references to the same ob’ect in different publics rds used in titles 2 this seemed Part Tuo is @ glossary of the individual ~ ing and use with a discussion of their ni useful. The most difficult aspe and meaningful translation, it is often the in titles have several meanings or the sense is vague or unknown. of this project ras been adequate se that uords used For many titles, ve know littie or nothing about the actual duties and functions they imply, Hence, a translation may be vague due to doubt about the meaning cf one cr more of ite component terms or because it is impossible to define functions. Most of the references recorded are to stelae, tombs, and the like, where titles are simply mentioned, There are precious few contexts uhich tell us uhat @ given official actually did. with many of eagues will dise I thus expect thet my ¢ the translations offered here, where justifizetion is needed, Two. to individusl words in Par this will be found in the no Admittedly, there is much that is controvers: example, adopted Lorton's rencering of ip.st-nsu as "royal counting-house," instead of tre usual "royal serem,” since I am presently convinced that the latter is incorrect. I am not fully persuaded thet Lorton's rendering fits ell ceses, but have chosen it as the better alternative, Similar protiess arise in other cases, Therefore, I present my translations more as a convenience than as my oun final judgement, Justification for many transla~ tions offered here must avait publication of mere detailed studies. One decision was made vith great reluctance, to omit personal nemes, These would, of course, have been of help in locating individual and I realize thet this « I have, for monuments belonging to the s: omission lessens the value cf th s work, *ovs.ar, including the bulk of the e doubled ¢ 5 larger volume, Printing costs er size was personal names would literally references, resulting in @ + are such that the decision in favour of ihs s: inevitable, 1. 2 3. NOTES TO IKTRODUCTION Dunham, Naga-ed-Dér Stelze of the First Intermediate Period (Oxford, 1937); Schenkel, Frihritteldgyptische Studien (Bonn, 1962), pp. 95 fF. Borchardt, Denkméler des Alten Reiches (ausser den Statuen). Vol, 2 (Cairo, 1964), passim, Helck, Verualtung, pp. 279 f. He quotes @ passage from HT It, 8, 5 (8M 574) in uhich Hnty-m-smy.t states: "I became a True King's Acquaintance, one whose actions his majesty approved, who placed the nobles at their stations," Helck sees in this a definition of the title as indicating an official "die fir die Innehaltung des Zeremoniells verantuortlich waren," But there is nothing which grammatically connects "True king's Acquaintance" with "who placed the nobles. In the light of the very le Middle Kingdom times, 1 think i number of rp nsw's in much more likely that any favoured person might be cranted the privilege of being e "King's Acquaintance," but thet ac actual responsibilities vere involved, Both importent and minor officials could be a rp nsw and this is often the sole epithet for unimportant people with no titles at all, i think all this points to rp nsu being purely honourific. Ynty-mesmy.t may well have been responsible for the placing of his colleagues at palace cere- monies, but this was in his capacity as a high official, not because he vas 2 "King's Acquaintance." For example, Lange and Schifer, Grab- und Denkstein des Mittleren Reichs. 4 vols, (Beriin, 1902-15), is available to me only on microfilm so that the snotographs are sometimes too 3 of individual signs. With small or indistinct to creck de regard to Gayet, Stéles de la Xile dynastie (Paris, 1586), uhich is full of errors, I have consulted as many photagraphs in other publications as possible, but have not been entirely successful. S, Lorton, JARCE 11 (1974), 98 Ff, This phrase is fully dis~ cussed in my work on feminine titles of the Middle Kingdom now in preparation (Chap. 5). NOTE: TRANSLITERATION OF THE GENITIVE PARTICLE There seems to be no overall consistancy in the spelling of in Middle Kingdom titles, Some titles such the genitive parti as imy-r set, imy-r Chnusty and imy-r u°r.t are inevitably Followed by the masculine n, not the expected feminine nt. On the other hand, the title imy-r hmu-ntr is sometimes followed by the singular n, sometimes by the plural nu, 1 have thus generally transliterated the genitive particle according to what is actually written, not according to the rules of modern arammaticel theory. PART ONE INDEX OF TITLES The order in uhich the titles are given is strictly alphabe~ tical, including such adjectives as °3, ur, nb, etc, Prepositions are not considered. Compound words are treated as single terms. Note especially that feminine titles follow their masculine counter- parts with all their variants, e.0., titles beginning with imy.t-r (Nos, 423-24) follow ali titles beginning with imy-r (Nos, 28-422), In several cases, the reading of titles given here ic different from that of cther authors; the difference has been noted only in exceptional cases, With titles of the type "Xx of Y," uhere the genitive is not written, these may in some cases be tuo separate titles, e.g., bry-pr uhmu, "Majordomo of the Herald,” (No. 982), could be "Masordomo, Herald.” The fullest attested form of the Eoyptian spelling is givens variant spellings are acded usually only uhen these are not well knoun or where unusual signs are involved. The references are to publicetions rather than museum numbers to facilitate locating them, References such as "Martin, passim," are given uhere there are more than five exomples in a publication uhich has its oun title index, All references are given to a publication here no such index exists, Following the references to the publications uhere a title le there are cross-references to other appears, vhere apvlic titles in which it is 2 component. Und-r "Disc." are references to discussions of a given title and such remarks as vere thought useful. & 1.
