TRANSPORT AND HANDLING EQUIPMENT

1. Swap-body: also known as “exchangeable


unit” or “interchangeable unit” is one of the standard
freight containers for road and rail transport. It is
equipped with four legs with adjustable height,
which allows placing it on the same types of trucks,
trailers, railroad platforms.
2. Grappler-Lift: grasping device having
hinged tines or jaws that close around an object or
load, used especially in lifting or dragging heavy
items.
3. Road - Railer Trailer: is a highway trailer or
semi-trailer that can be hauled on road by LGV or
attached directly to bogies for use in railroad
intermodal service.
4. River barge: is a flat – bottomed boat built
mainly for carrying loose goods such as: sand,
cement, rice… Barge used mainly for river and canal
transport of heavy goods.
5. Large goods vehicle (LGV or HGV – Heavy
goods vehicle ): is the EU term for any lorry with a
gross combination mass of over 3500 kg, used for
transporting goods by container or road-railer.

1. Gantry crane: a crane built atop a gantry,


travels along a supported structure which can
span a wide area to raise and lower heavy cargo
onto a form of transport.
2. ISO container: or intermodal container
designed and built for storing and transport
materials and products efficiently and securely
in intermodal transport system.
3. Reach stacker: is a vehicle used for handling
intermodal cargo containers in small terminals
or medium-sized ports. Reach stackers can
transport a container short distance very quickly
and pile them in various rows depending on its
access.
4. Transtainer: is a lifting device for loading or
unloading containers onto or from railway
wagons or to store the containers on top of each
other in stacks in a container yard. Trainstainer
may be used on rails or on rubber tires.
