CASE1:

What happened?

 Three strikes by workers regarding working rules in the company and disturbing attitude of
managers towards workers.
 Loss of 20 million due to strike. One of the workers got suspended which led to a big mob
violence in the Manesar factory of MSIL in which one of its HR managers got burnt to death
leading to extreme shock among people.

Why did this happen?

 MSIL started its new plant in Manesar after its success in the Gurgaon office.
 It employed many young employees of Haryana.
 The employees are not happy with the management as it is way too strict eg. the breaks are
way too less, no paid leaves, no talking rule, etc.
 Management’s behaviour is very rude towards the workers and pay is less too as compare to
Gurgaon workers
 Demand for separate union was raised
 Workers started strikes for improving working conditions
 One of the employee got fired because of getting into argument with top management
 Workers got angry and started collecting which created a mob violence
 Workers started beating managers
 In between Awinash dev tried to stop them because of which he got injured and when fire
started in the factory he was unable to run and got burnt in the incident.

Solutions -

 Policies need to be changed for Manesar plant and should not be similar to Gurgaon plant.
 Better work culture should be developed.
 Management should try to bridge the gap among workers and supervisors.
 Average age should be at least, 30 years so that each one of them could interact better and
learn from each other's experiences.
 Organizational behaviour seminar/ workshop should be conducted.

CASE2

What happened?

 Dr Reddy’s Plant at Pdb employed nearly 500 employees based on the contract by the
external contractor firm.
 The worker’s union submitted a charter of demands to the management about their
grievances which had 25 demands in total.
 There was a request from the contractors to make their positions permanent to provide job
security.

 Still, the management agreed to increase their wages from 220 to 260inr/day but the union
workers only demand was to make them permanent employees.
 The management responded that the contract employees should report their demands to
their respective contractors, not the company stating that they have not hired them directly.
 Some of the workers are frustrated as they have pressure from their families and money
lenders and they want to break the strike, but they were threatened by the union
representative
 The union workers complied with the management to let the USFDA audit take place
without any interruption realising the fact that their job exists only if the company exists.
 The contract workers are in the belief that new employees replaced them and this makes
them forcibly check employees’ identity cards and the regular employees seek the help of
the police department.
 The media was adding fuel to the fire by focusing only on the worker’s side of the story.
 The management also tried to stop the strike by contacting the village elders and influential
people.
 Both parties started negotiation and finally, they agreed on increasing the per day wage to
260INR but out of 500 workers they only take back 180 workers that too on a contract basis
and no contract worker would be regularized.

Why it happened?

 The only motive of the workers who were involved in the strike was to transition to the
permanent job, the other factors like politics were only supporting factors.

Solutions

 Hiring of more skilled workers and avoiding hiring contractual workers that need frequent
training to boost productivity and efficiency of the organization.
 The company can set up an institution to provide loans to the contractual workers when
they are unable to secure loans from regular banks.
 The company can skip the contractors and just provide employment to the contract workers
directly offering them a little higher wage.
 Moving slowly towards automation and preferably hiring permanent workers to avoid these
type of situations and reduce human error.
