HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Sometime in 1964, Rev. Fr. Carol Bernard, PME, the Parish Priest of St.
James the Apostle Parish in Bunawan, Davao City, having witnessed the need to
provide a catholic education among the youth of the parish, thought of
establishing a school to cater them. It was then actualized in June, 1964 when he
opened the school, the Assumption Academy of Bunawan with 78 first year
students divided into two sections. There were two FMA Sisters, two lay teachers
and Mrs. Lydia Caballero the principal who helped Fr. Bernard in the education of
the said youth enrolled.

The first year of operation was successful and inspiring so that the
following years, the enrollment increased. On its second year of existence, Fr.
Bernard changed the name of the school into Holy Cross of Bunawan with Ms.
Lilia Mondragon as the principal. On April, 1968, the school was very proud and
happy to reap the first fruits of her existence.

Seventeen fruitful years passed and the PME founder Fr. Bernard with the
PME fathers felt that they have done their share in the development of the people
who had come to the Holy Cross of Bunawan. Thus, the management of the
school was turned over to the Archbishop in turn, with full trust and confidence in
the capability of the TDM Sisters, gave to them the authority to manage and
administer the school. The change in leadership and status however did not
change the same spirit of the school as envisioned by the founder.

The TDM Sisters continued the management of the school with the same
vision. Holy Cross of Bunawan has grown as it can be seen now.
INTRODUCTION TO WORK IMMERSION

Work immersion is a main feature of the Senior High School curriculum and
refers to the 80 hours of hands-on experience or work simulation that Grade 12
students will go through to reveal them to the actual workplace and to enrich the
skills and knowledge provided by the school. With four exit options for SHS
graduates envisioned, namely higher education, entrepreneurship, employment,
or middle-level skill development, the first batch of Grade 12 students is
anticipated to become full-fledged contributors to social development and nation-
building.

Work immersion is a main topic in the Senior High School curriculum that is

delivered in a variety of formats and time frames to meet the needs of Senior
High School students. The subject gives students the opportunity to become
acquainted with the workplace, to simulate employment, and to utilize their
qualifications in specialties subjects in genuine work environments. The learning
experience that students can gain from it will undoubtedly enable and assist
students as they become acquainted with the workplace modeling and apply their
skillsets in their respective areas.

Work immersion is required for graduating from high school under the K to
12 program. With its curriculum, it aims to develop globally competitive citizens,
preparing students for further research, employment, or entrepreneurship. One of
life's most important teachers is experience. As apprentices, we can use it as
encouragement as we develop experience in our particular fields. This
experience will undoubtedly benefit us not only in our lives as students, but also
in our future jobs as professionals of the country.
