Asphalt Base Course Concreting Work

[Done from Km 0+100 – Km 4+180 by 05 Aug. 2019]

OBSERVED DEFICIENCIES
A. During sampling cores
1) Surface crack in all directions and extended up to 20 mm deep
2) Poor bonding or no bonding between aggregate base and asphalt base
3) Aggregate particles on the surface are not adequately bonded to the mix
4) Washing with water jet in the core area and the surroundings

B. In the field during laying

1) Compaction is started with vibratory roller when the mix is too hot for compaction
2) Compaction equipment used appears to be too heavy, both the vibratory roller and
the pneumatic one
3) Compaction was started from the center and proceeded toward the edge
4) Compaction at the edges was seemed inadequate

C. In the laboratory in general

1) Tests not witnessed or sporadically done from Consultant’s side
2) Reporting of results are not quite often complying with the test standards

SUGGESTED
1) Use of increased tack coat material by small amount and slightly decreasing the
proportion of kerosene in the tack coat material
2) Reduction of weights of compaction equipment
3) Making available of light pneumatic tyre roller(8T) at site
4) Use of minimum water or lightly oiled tyre/wheel of rollers during compaction
5) Frequent checking temperatures of laid asphalt to ensure correct temperature for rolling
6) Ensure compaction effort is discontinued as soon as a temperature of 80 0 C is reached
7) Allow one more pass each time when it starts at both of the edges
8) Improve quality of reporting
