Abstract

Wind energy is currently the largest contributing resource of renewable energy in the
Republic of Ireland. Electricity generated from wind turbines in the republic represents one of
the highest wind power penetrations in the world. Irish wind energy is providing an
emissions-free, clean renewable energy. This paper presents an overview of the Irish wind
energy system and EirGrid Smart Grid daily performance. A sample of daily energy
generated from wind energy was collected online and analysed using statistical approach. In
addition, a detailed analysis based on measures of central tendency and dispersion is also
presented. The daily mean for energy generated on the 18 August 2022 was 1506 MW, with a
standard deviation of 5.3. The overall performance of the system was found to be
outperformed. This study shows that wind energy is an economically and environmentally
sound option for renewable energy deployment in Ireland.

Introduction

Once called windmills, the technology used to harness the power of wind has advanced
significantly over the past ten years, with the United States increasing its wind power
capacity 30% year over year. Wind turbines, as they are now called, collect and convert the
kinetic energy that wind produces into electricity to help power the grid.

Wind energy is a by-product of the sun. The sun’s uneven heating of the atmosphere, the
earth’s irregular surfaces (mountains and valleys), and the planet's revolution around the sun
all combine to create wind. Since wind is in plentiful supply, it’s a sustainable resource for as
long as the sun’s rays heat the planet.

As for how we collect the data of wind, we will use a device call anemometer. An
anemometer is an instrument that measures wind speed and wind pressure. Anemometers are
important tools for meteorologists, who study weather patterns. They are also important to
the work of physicists, who study the way air moves.

There are many advantages of wind energy:

1) Free Fuel
- As the wind turbine is power by wind and only wind, we don’t need other source
of input power to operate the wind turbine.
2) Reduce our dependence of fossil fuels
- Before this, we depend on fossil fuel to generate electricity, and this is bad for the
earth. But since the introduction of wind turbine, it creates a new and better option
of clean energy to cut tie of our dependence on fossil fuels.

But there are also many challenges to face:

1) Dangerous to some wildlife

- Wind turbines blades can be dangerous to the animal such as flying birds and bats.
They might not see the blades of the wind turbines and accidently got caught and
kill by the blades.
2) Expensive upfront cost
- The structures of the wind turbines are hundreds of feet tall and the material of the
structures and the maintained the wind turbines
