QUESTION 1
A Fibonacci number pattern is a pattern where a number is determined
by adding the two previous numbers. The original Fibonacci pattern is shown
below:
1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, …
We are going to use this pattern to make our own Fibonacci sequences.
Question 1.1 [3 marks]
Examine the pattern below and write down the next three terms in the
sequence.
1; 3; 4; 7; 11; 18; 29; ____; ______; _______
Question 1.1.1 [1 mark]
What is the sum of the first 10 numbers?
Question 1.1.2 [2 mark]
Multiply the seventh number in the above sequence with 11. What do you
notice?
QUESTION 2
Question 2.1 [1 mark]
Create another Fibonacci sequence starting with: 0; 2; …. Write down the next 8
numbers in the sequence.
Question 2.2 [1 mark]
What is the sum of the first 10 numbers?
3
Question 2.3 [2 mark]
Multiply the seventh number with 11. What do you see?
QUESTION 3
Question 3.1 [1 mark]
Make a third Fibonacci pattern. This time, choose your own numbers to start
with. Write down the first 10 numbers of the sequence.
Question 3.2 [1 mark]
Add the first 10 numbers.
Question 3.3 [2 mark]
Multiply the seventh number with 11. What do you see?
QUESTION 4 [1 mark]
Draw a conclusion regarding this type of pattern based on what you saw in
questions 1–3.
QUESTION 5
Johnny’s tile shop has a newly designed tile. It can be ordered in different sizes.
Size 1 has one white tile in the middle and is surrounded by eight black tiles; size
2 has four white tiles in the middle and is surrounded by twelve black tiles.

Figure 1: Different tile sizes.
Question 5.1 [2 marks]
Draw tile 4 and 5.
Question 5.2 [12 marks]
Study the patterns and complete the table below.
Table 1: Tile details.
Size of design 1 2 3 4 5 10 21 100
Number of white tiles 1
Number of black tiles 8
Total number of tiles 9
Question 5.3 [2 marks]
Explain how you calculated the number of white tiles in size 10.
Question 5.4 [2 marks]
Explain how you calculated the number of black tiles in size 100.
Question 5.5 [1 mark]
If there are 169 white tiles in a design, what will be its size?
5
Question 5.6 [1 mark]
If there are 168 black tiles in a design, what will be its size?
Question 5.7 [6 marks]
Write down a formula to separately calculate the amount of white tiles (W), black
tiles (S) and total number of tiles (T) ,for any design size (g). Use the table below.
Table 2: Rule for all tiles. Formula
Number of white tiles (W)
Number of black tiles (S)
Total number of tiles (T)
Question 5.8 [9 marks]
Explain how you can test whether the above mentioned formulae are correct.
Prove your answer by testing size 1.
