The word preposition (pre-position) means a position before a thing or word etc. In other
words, a preposition is a word or a group of words placed before a noun or a pronoun to show
its relation with some other word in a sentence.

Here is a short list of 45 of the more common one-word prepositions. Many of these prepositions
have more than one meaning.

1) Aboard - on or onto a ship, plane, bus or train.Eg: We went aboard the boat.
2) About - on the subject of somebody/something; in connection with
somebody/something.Eg: a book about flowers
3) Above- at or to a higher place or position than something/somebody.Eg: We were flying
above the clouds.
4) Across -from one side to the other side of something.Eg: I drew a line across the page.
5) After - later than something; following something in time.Eg: After winning the prize she
became famous overnight.
6) Against-opposing or disagreeing with somebody/something.Eg: We're playing against the
league champions next week.
7) Along - from one end to or towards the other end of something.Eg: I looked along the
shelves for the book I needed.
8) Amid-surrounded by something.Eg:The hotel was in a beautiful position amid lemon
groves.

9) Among-surrounded by somebody/something; in the middle of somebody/something.Eg:


I found the letter amongst his papers.
10) anti - if somebody is anti somebody/something, they do not like or agree with that person
or thing.Eg:They're completely anti the new proposals.
11) Around-surrounding somebody/something; on each side of something.Eg:The house is
built around a central courtyard.
12) As: used to describe the fact that somebody/something has a particular job or
function.Eg: She works as a courier.
13) At: used to say where something/somebody is or where something happensEg:At the
corner of the street.
14) Before-earlier than somebody/something.Eg:The year before last he won a gold medal,
and the year before that he won a silver.
15) Behind-at or towards the back of somebody/something, and often hidden by it or
them.Eg-The sun disappeared behind the clouds.
16) Below-at or to a lower level or position than somebody/something.Eg-He dived below the
surface of the water.
17) Beneath-in or to a lower position than somebody/something; under
somebody/something.Eg-They found the body buried beneath a pile of leaves.
18) Beside-next to or at the side of somebody/something.Eg:He sat beside her all night.
19) Besides-in addition to somebody/something; apart from somebody/something.Eg:
Besides working as a doctor, he also writes novels in his spare time.
20) Between-in or into the space separating two or more points, objects, people, etc.Eg:Q
comes between P and R in the English alphabet.
21) Beyond-on or to the further side of something.Eg:The road continues beyond the village
up into the hills.But-except; apart from.Eg:We've had nothing but trouble with this car.
22) By-near somebody/something; at the side of somebody/something; beside
somebody/something.Eg:The telephone is by the window.
23) Concerning-about something; involving somebody/something.Eg:He asked several
questions concerning the future of the company
24) Considering-used to show that you are thinking about a particular fact, and are influenced
by it, when you make a statement about something.Eg-She's very active, considering her
age.
25) Despite-used to show that something happened or is true although something else might
have happened to prevent it .Eg:Her voice was shaking despite all her efforts to control
it.
26) Down-from a high or higher point on something to a lower one.Eg:The stone rolled down
the hill.
27) During-all through a period of time.Eg:There are extra flights to Colorado during the
winter.

33) From-used to show the material that something is made of.Eg:Steel is made from iron.
34) In-within the shape of something; surrounded by something.Eg:She was lying in bed.
35) Inside-on or to the inner part of something/somebody; within something/somebody.Eg:
You'll feel better with a good meal inside you.
36) Into -to a position in or inside something.Eg: He threw the letter into the fire.
37) Like-similar to somebody/something.Eg:She's wearing a dress like mine.
38) Minus-used to express temperature below zero degrees.Eg:The temperature dropped to
minus 28 degrees centigrade (−28°C).
39) Of-belonging to somebody; relating to somebody. Eg:Can't you throw out that old bike of
Tommy's?
40) Off-down or away from a place or at a distance in space or time.Eg-Keep off the grass!
41) Onto-used with verbs to express movement on or to a particular place or positionEg:Move
the books onto the second shelf.
42) Opposite-acting in a film/movie or play as the partner of somebodyEg:She starred
opposite Tom Hanks.
43) Outside-on or to a place on the outside of somethingYou can park your car outside our
house.
44) Over-resting on the surface of somebody/something and partly or completely covering
them/itEg:She put a blanket over the sleeping child.
45) Past-on or to the other side of somebody/something.Eg:He hurried past them without
stopping.
