AIM

To determine the thermal conductivity of Glass Wool

APPARATUS

The apparatus consists of SS 304 vessel diameter 210mm Mounted on a tripod

stand heater is fixed at the inner side, bottom of the vessel. Temperature
sensors are provided at the bottom and top of the glass wool to sense inlet and
outlet temperature. Two set point Digital temperature indicators fixed on the
panel.

OPERATING SYSTEM

1. Give the Electrical Connection to the apparatus

2. Switch on the main to activate the panel.
3. Give input to the heater, slowing by regulating the heater knob
4. Note the temperature at different volts & Amps
5. After finishing the experiment switch of the electric connection.

CALCULATIONS

1. HEAT INPUT

QA = V X I Watts

Where,

V = Voltage, I = Current
2. THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF GLASS WOOL

K= Q X L
A X ∆T

Where,

∆T = Temperature Difference

Q = Heat Input
L = Height of the Glass Wool
A = Vessel/Glass Wool Area

Area = ∏/4 X D2

L = Height of the Glass Wool - 50 mm = 0.05 Mtr

D = Diameter – 21 cm = 0.21 Mtr

PRECAUTIONS

I. Check all the electric connections before running

II. Input to the heater should be given slowly
III. Before running, after finishing the experiment heater controller should be in
off position.
