After years studying North America's black bears in the (1) .... way wildlife biologist Luke
Robertson felt no closer to understanding the creatures. He realised that he had to (2) ....
their trust. Abandoning scientific detachment, he took the daring step of forming
relationships with the animals, bringing them food to gain their acceptance.

The (3) .... into their behaviour has allowed him to dispel certain myths about bears. (4) ....
to popular belief, he contends that bears do not (5) .... as much for fruit as previously
supposed. He also (6) .... that they are ferocious. He says that people should not be (7) ....
by behaviour such as swatting paws on the ground as this is a defensive rather than an
aggresive act.

However, Robertson is no sentimentalist. After devoting years of his life to bears, he is

under no (8) .... about their feelings for him. It is clear that their interest in him does
not (9) .... beyond the food he brings.

For me, the highlight of this past week's science news was the images (1) ........ back from
the Curiosity rover, providing (2) ........ geologic evidence that water flowed on Mars. Of
course, this wasn't exactly a surprise; for decades, planetary scientists have suggested the
channel networks visible in spacecraft imagery couldn't have been made by anything else.
The evidence has been (3) ........ as well, as various clay minerals and iron oxides have been
identified through hyperspectral imagery.

Nonetheless, I suspect that the image of definitely water-lain (4) ........ made the heart of
more than one geologist (5) ........ a beat. Ground truth. You could argue that the scientific
exploration of the extra-terrestrial is, at least (6) ........ part, a search for meaning: to
position us within a larger cosmology. But our fascination with, and connection to, what we
see in the night sky comes not just through science, but also through art. So it should come
as no surprise that scientific images of planetary surfaces have (7) ........ inspiration to a
range of artists from Galileo - whose first sketches of the moon through a telescope
are (8) ........ beautiful - to Barbara Hepworth - whose interpretations of the lunar surface
are far less literal.

OPEN CLOZE

The truth (1) ........ nobody really knows how language first began. Did we all start talking at
around the same time (2) ........ of the manner in which our brains had begun to develop?

Although there is a lack of clear evidence, people have come up with various theories about
the origins of language. One recent theory is that human beings have evolved in (3) ........ a
way that we are programmed for language from the moment of birth. In (4) ........ words,
language came about as a result of an evolutionary change in our brains at some stage.
Language (5) ........ well be programmed into the brain but, (6) ......... this, people still need
stimulus from others around them. From studies, we know that (7) ........ children are
isolated from human contact and have not learnt to construct sentences before they are
ten, it is doubtful they will ever do so. The research shows, if (8) ......... else, that language is
a social activity, not something invented (9) ......... isolation.
