DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1. How can we define the H&T industry?

The hospitality and tourism industry is a broad category of businesses that provide
services related to leisure, travel, and entertainment. This includes hotels,
restaurants, resorts, cruise lines, theme parks and other attractions.

2. What are the main characteristics of H&T organizations?

Hospitality industry has many characteristics such as intangible, perishable,


inseparable, simultaneous, variable, shift work, graveyard shift and guest
satisfaction. Intangible service characteristics in the hospitality industry mean
cannot see and touch but can feel.

3. Can we make generalizations about H&T organizations?

Yes , because the organization is important to our economy.

4. How are managing H&T organizations different from managing manufacturing


organizations?

Manufacturing organizations produce physical, tangible goods that can be stored


in inventory before they are needed. By contrast, service organizations produce
intangible products that cannot be produced ahead of time.

5. How much do the unique characteristics of H&T organizations impact the


strategic management practices in H&T organizations?

There are four main characteristics of tourism, and these are intangibility,
perishability, inseparability, and variability that are in contrast to those of
physical products that are produced, stored, later sold, and stilled later
consumed.
6. How can we better apply strategic management theories in H&T organizations?

Strategic management involves the formulation and implementation of major goals and
initiatives taken by organization's senior management on behalf of stakeholders based on
consideration of resources and assessment of internal and external environments at
which the organization operates.

7. In what areas do the industry characteristics influence the management practices


in H&T organizations?

8. In what situations can strategic management help H&T organizations?

Strategic management involves setting objectives, analyzing the competitive


environment, analyzing the internal organization, evaluating strategies and ensuring
that management rolls out the strategies across the organization. At its heart,
strategic management involves identifying how the organization stacks up
compared to its competitors and recognizing opportunities and threats facing an
organization, whether they come from within the organization or from competitors.

9. Why has the current level of strategy research in the H&T field been limited?

Every business needs to keep customers and clients happy, but in the
hospitality industry it’s so vitally important to keep guests engaged in order for
the business to grow and prosper. Good customer service is one of the keys to
success in any business, but is particularly important in the hotel industry,
where guests are looking to staff to help them make their stay as relaxing and
comfortable as possible.
