What are modal verbs in English and how do
they use them?
Although the grammar of English seems simple, there is some content that can
complicate our lives as we learn the language, especially when it comes to this
type of verb in English, known as modal verbs.
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs. This means that they are not conjugated with
grammatical persons, so:
 They do not have an infinitive (for example, there is no to can)
 They do not have a gerund (for example, there is no mighting)
 They have no participle (for example, there is no willed)
A modal verb can express ability, need, condition or "modality" (yes, complex
ideas!), hence its meaning depends on the context of the sentence and the verbs
with which they are conjugated.
Por ejemplo: My keys must be in the car; (Mis llaves seguramente están en el
auto.)
Here the modal verb must modifies the verb to be, to indicate that it is very likely
that the keys are in the car, we are almost sure of it.

The characteristics of modal verbs

There are four main characteristics of modal verbs:
 They are not conjugated, as we saw in the previous section.
 They modify other verbs, so after a modal verb there is always a verb in its
infinitive form (without the to), for example:
You can eat better
(Tú puedes comer mejor)
 They express certainty, ability, need, willingness and obligation.
 The negative or interrogative form of a modal verb does not need an
auxiliary, since the verb in question is used for those purposes, for example:
I can't swim
(No sé nadar)

Can you drive?

(¿Puedes manejar?)

Modal verbs, or modal verbs, are those verbs in English that help a sentence have
a better meaning thanks to their function. You can use them when you want to give
another meaning to a sentence. For example, if you want to ask permission to
speak or to find out if they could come looking for you.
So, these verbs that serve as auxiliary verbs, seek to give a specific meaning to
certain actions.

Can
Its meaning will depend on what you want to say. You can use it to express some
possibility or request, or to say that you are qualified or qualified for something.
 I can speak english = Puedo hablar inglés.
 He can’t escort go with you = No puede acompañarte
 Can you help me? = ¿Me puedes ayudar?

should
This verb that is translated into Spanish as "duty" has the idea of an obligation or
recommendation. Examples:
 You should take your medicine = Debes tomar tu medicina
 We should not be in this meeting= Nosotros no deberíamos estar en esta
reunión
 Should I rest more? = ¿Debería descansar más?

Must
On some occasions it can mean assumptions, but the most common is that it
refers to needs or commitments.
You must be joking. = Debes estar bromeando.
Maybe, she must have done something. = Quizás, ella debió hacer algo.
