Q1: Define the Classifications of Computer. (10)

There are two type of classification of computer.

1. Classes by size
2. Classes by functions

There are four terms of computer classes by size.

i. Microcomputers (personal computers)

ii. Minicomputers (midrange computers)
iii. Main frame computers
iv. Supercomputer

Let’s discuss them one by one;

Microcomputers
Microcomputers are the most common type of computers used by people today, whether in a
workplace, at school or on the desk at home. The examples of microcomputers are desktop
computers, notebook computers, tablet etc. Microcomputers in a way are the need of the hour.

Minicomputers
Now days the term midrange is used in place of minicomputers. Midrange is more powerful than
normal desktop or work station because it controls the several computers. Minicomputers used in

smaller organizations. Now day’s servers are used in the place of minicomputers because servers
control at the time several hundred computers and thousand as well at times. These servers are
high power servers which are made by hewelett Packard and strong companies.

Mainframe Computers
Main frame computers are used in large organizations. They are very large and expensive
computers which are capable of supporting hundreds, or even thousands, of users
simultaneously. They are also called as enterprise servers. There are multiple processors in these
computers. Banks and shopping marts use mainframe computers.

Supercomputers
Supercomputers are used for complex operations like rocket launching and weather predictions
etc. their storage is 160 trillion bytes and memory is 60 trillion bytes.

The classification of computer by functions is;

i. Servers
ii. Workstations
iii. Information appliances
iv. Embedded Computers

Server
Server is a physical computer which run, control and host the other computers on the network.
Servers are of different types and they work according to their functions like mail server, file
server etc. they all work in their respective contexts.

Work stations
In networking, workstation refers to any computer connected to a local-area network. It could be
