LESSON: Comparing and Ordering Numbers

Objectives:
1. Compare whole numbers
2. Arrange whole numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least

Two of the largest islands in the world are Honshu Island and Luzon. Honshu Island is in Japan
and has an area of 227 475 square kilometers. Luzon is in the Philippines and has an area of 105 870
square kilometers. Which island is bigger?

To determine the answer, use the place value chart below to compare the areas of the two islands.
Start comparing the numbers by looking at the digits in the highest place value.
MILLIONS THOUSANDS UNITS
Hundred- Ten- Hundred- Ten-
Millions Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
Millions Millions Thousands Thousands
2 2 7 4 7 5
1 0 5 8 7 0

2 > 1, so 227 475 > 105 870.

Thus, Honshu Island is larger than Luzon.

Study the other examples below.

a. Compare 12 567 345 and 13 457 980.

The digits in the ten-millions place are the same.

In the millions place, 2 < 3, so, 12 567 345 < 13 457 980 or 13 457 980 > 12 567 345.

Thus, 12 567 345 is less than 13 457 980.

b. Arrange the numbers from greatest to least.

43 765 879 43 657 978 43 897 321

The three numbers have the same digits in the ten-millions and
Millions of places.

The digits in the hundred-thousand place are 7,6, and 8, respectively.

7>6<8 or 8>7>6

Therefore, the numbers when arranged from greatest to least will be

43 897 321 43 765 879 43 657 978

Points to Ponder
Numbers can be arranged from greatest to least or least
to greatest.
To compare numbers, compare each digit from the
highest place value to the lowest place value.
Use the symbols > (greater than), < (less than), or = (equal
to) in comparing numbers.

Get Started:

A. Compare each pair of numbers by writing >, <, or = in the blank

1. 23 568 _____ 15 458

3. 5 689 _____ 1 895
4. 4 568 _____ 4 568
5. 457 874 _____ 548 547
B. Compare each set of numbers. Color the shape with the number that
has the greatest value GREEN and the number with the least value RED.
