Natural numbers
~1~
We write numbers using only ten symbols (called Digits).
Where we place them is important.
Each time we want to show a bigger number we just add one column to the left and we know it
is always 10 times bigger than than the column on its right.

Reading and writing large numbers
We say large numbers by listing the numbers in order of size, biggest first. When reading a
single number, all the number labels should be singular, for example 10,400 is ten thousand
four hundred and not ten thousands four hundreds.
Examples:
• 345 is three hundred and forty-five.
• 59,321 is fifty-nine thousand, three hundred and twenty-one.
• 1,345,612 is one million, three hundred and forty-five thousand, six hundred and twelve.
• 156,200 is one hundred and fifty-six thousand, two hundred.

Inverse relationship of Addition and Subtraction
There is an inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.
If a math fact is considered, for example 3 + 7 = 10. Then the following are also true:
• 10 - 3 = 7
• 10 - 7 = 3
Similar relationships exist for subtraction, for example 10 - 3 = 7. Then the following are also true:
• 3 + 7 = 10
• 7 + 3 = 10
The reason for this is that we are dealing with an equation. An equation is balanced or the same on
either side of the equals (=) sign. If exactly the same thing is done to both sides of the equation, it
will still be balanced or equal.
In the example above we start with the equation 3 + 7 = 10

Mixed operations
"Operations" mean things like add, subtract, multiply, divide, squaring, etc. If it isn't a
number it is probably an operation. But, when you see something like...
7 + (6 × 52 + 3)
6 × (5 + 3) = 6 × 8 = 48
6 × (5 + 3) = 30 + 3 = 33 (wrong)
5 × 22 = 5 × 4 = 20
30 ÷ 5 × 3 = 30 ÷ 15 = 2 (wrong)

Exponents
The exponent of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication.
In words: 82 could be called "8 to the power 2" or "8 to the second power", or simply "8 squared"
Example: 53 = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125
In words: 53 could be called "5 to the third power", "5 to the power 3" or simply "5 cubed"

Roots
The root of a number x is another number, which when multiplied by itself a given number of times,
equals x. For example, the second root of 9 is 3, because 3x3 = 9.
