SONG ANALYSIS

Song : Mirrorball – Taylor Swift

Mirrorball by Taylor Swift was released in July 24th, 2020 as the sixth track of Taylor
Swift’s eight album, folklore.

Lyric :
Verse 1 : I want you to know
I'm a mirrorball
I'll show you every version of yourself tonight
I'll get you out on the floor
Shimmering beautiful
And when I break it's in a million pieces

Chorus : Hush
When no one is around, my dear
You'll find me on my tallest tiptoes
Spinning in my highest heels, love
Shining just for you
Hush
I know they said the end is near
But I'm still on my tallest tiptoes
Spinning in my highest heels, love
Shining just for you

Verse 2 : I want you to know

I'm a mirrorball
I can change everything about me to fit in
You are not like the regulars
The masquerade revelers
Drunk as they watch my shattered edges glisten

Chorus : Hush
When no one is around, my dear
You'll find me on my tallest tiptoes
Spinning in my highest heels, love
Shining just for you
Hush
I know they said the end is near
But I'm still on my tallest tiptoes
Spinning in my highest heels, love
Shining just for you

Bridge : And they called off the circus

Burned the disco down
When they sent home the horses
And the rodeo clowns
I'm still on that tightrope
I'm still trying everything to get you laughing at me
I'm still a believer but I don't know why
I've never been a natural
All I do is try, try, try
I'm still on that trapeze
I'm still trying everything
To keep you looking at me
Because I'm a mirrorball
I'm a mirrorball
I'll show you every version of yourself
Tonight

1. Figurative Language :
o Metaphor : I’m a mirrorball
o Personification : And when I break it's in a million pieces
o Hyperbole : I can change everything about me to fit in, I'm still trying everything,
o Alliteration : I'm still on my tallest tiptoes, Spinning in my highest heels
o Paradox : I'm still a believer but I don't know why

2. Song Interpretation :
The song start by Taylor Swift saying “I want you to know, i'm a
mirrorball,” which indicates mirrorball as a metaphor. Mirrorballs are shiny,
beautifull, and also reflective. They shine when the light on them but when it’s not
no one will take a second glance at them. This represent Swift’s tendency to be a
people pleaser and she shift her personality depending on the person. She mirrors
people personality to make them like her. Mirrorball can also represent a
relationship that’s beautiful and shiny on the inside but it’s fragile and delicate in
reality.
On the chorus, she talks about how when no one is around but you can still
find her trying her best. This symbolize how she slowly losing herself and not
being able to stop being a people pleaser.
On the second verse she finally realizes that she’s broken, hence the
“Drunk as they watch my shattered edges glisten” line. This line also tells a story
about how people rejoice when she’s entertaining them but reject her when she’s
broken.
On the bridge, she tells about the circus being called off, I believe this
pinpoint to the current situation when the song is released. Covid-19 outbreak has
just began, therefore everything is cancelled and we need to do our activities from
home. Swift is no exception but even when she’s at home, she’s still on the
“tightrope” which is an extreme balancing act. This represent Swift desire to still
entertain people even from home.
All in all, Mirrorball bring important messages of people tendencies to
bend and twist as they see fit in the hope that others will like them more. Second,
Taylor brings a message on how she could show multiple version of a person, as
she is a mirrorball.
