● What is the purpose of the author?

The text being explored is through a documentary called Human published in 2020 on April 14 and the man’s
text (subtitles) specifically a man who is faced with post traumatic war disorder. The author portrays this
global issue through choosing this specific clip of him, his facial expressions and tone/mood in the clip show
how brutally the war had impacted him in the long run and why it's an important global issue to this day. This
is being portrayed to educate people around the world about global issues that are not spoken about
enough.

TEXT
(2 min)

In the documentary the man is speaking about his post traumatic disorder. The director films the man
speaking from a specific vantage point. An eye to eye vantage point that allows the audience to connect with
his story. This is because the eye level vantage point adds a feeling of genuine truthfulness and
straightforwardness/directness.Eyes talk a lot. The specific vantage point helps the audience capture his
intense eye contact with the camera projecting his expression towards post traumatic disorder which you
wouldn't be able to see well through another camera angle. This causes indirect foreshadowing in the clip you
can see that his eyes are the first feature that stands out to the audience. His eyes almost don't look real
from how he glares at the camera, not blinking . He looks blank and it's as if his eyes are filled with no
emotion, just pure nothingness. Which gives subtle hints to the audience that he will be talking about
something trauma related but they don't know what exactly. Which causes suspense since the man isn't
revealing the trauma right away. This can be a sign of trauma. Specifically post traumatic war disorder when
having to face explaining why you have this urge to kill someone after surviving a war. It's hard to connect
with the rest of your body since you are finding it a hard time to still accept what happened and you are in
utter shock. Which was the directors main intention to capture showing how the war brutally impacted him
through his empty looking eyes. Secondly, when he mentions the word “excuse” in the sentence “I yearn or
desire for someone to try to hurt me or break in or to give me an excuse to use that violence against
somebody else again”. The word excuse symbolizes so much more than just a plain ordinary excuse. It
symbolizes the urge he has to kill someone that he will look for an excuse. This shows how post traumatic
war disorder has a crucial impact on a person's mindset and the way they look at certain words from their
perspective when going through trauma.Such as the word “excuse” a plain normal word yet used in a
disturbing filled with trauma sentence. Lastly, the repetition while he was trying to explain how hard it is for
him to portray to the audience what he is feeling. This is shown when he state’s,”It’s really difficult to try to
explain to somebody, explain to somebody”. As you can see he repeated the sentence twice. The director
still kept this part in because it helps the audience see raw footage of the man speaking about how he
genuinely feels. Although its not shown much through his expression you can see it in small actions like
this.Which relates back to post traumatic disorder since he is finding it hard to accept what he is feeling that
it’s affecting his way of speaking and losing his control in what he is saying due to the trauma he has faced
that is difficult for him to comprehend. This is because throughout the whole clip of him speaking he didn't
stutter not once until he truly tried to go into detail about how he is feeling however he couldn't put it into
words leaving him to have to repeat himself.Which shows how violence in the war can leave you traumatized
long term and how hard it truly is to overcome it when it's not a normal situation to go through yet ironically
war is normalized.

BODY OF WORK
(2 min)

In the human documentary there are many clips exploring a similar global issue relating to post traumatic war
disorder. The man that we analyzed was talking between 21:17-22:20 minutes. The director placed a video
right before the man we analyzed that talked about post traumatic war disorder too through timings
20:08-21:10 minutes. This shows that the director purposely made the videos next to each other for the
purpose of the audience to see the directors intention on how many people commonly go through this global
issue. However not only did he do one before the clip. He did many clips right before the man we analyzed
with the same global issue. The next few clips after are also related to post traumatic war disorder that come
right after the man I originally analyzed. All these clips relating to post traumatic war disorder are the
Director's intention. The director included every single video from 13:48-27:34 all in a row to be related to
post traumatic war disorder. Every man that spoke throughout this time had one similar composition which
was the vantage point. Every single man spoke eye to eye with the camera. The man we originally realized
did the same composition and this relates to the body of work since the director had an intention to give out a
specific theme of trauma that every man had due to post traumatic war disorder. It was shown through the
vantage point. For instance the man speaking right before the man we analyzed originally spoke from
20:08-21:10 and he had a vantage point too.His eyes were aligned with the camera angle that helps the
audience capture his eye contact throughout the whole clip and see his genuine perspective through his
eyes of expression. Since as I mentioned before, eyes can talk. However, although this man was slightly
different when it came to his eye contact, he always broke off eye contact and didn't stay directly looking at
the camera as the man we originally analyzed did. This again is the director's intention to use the same
camera angle for all the people that went through post traumatic war disorder. To then portray how people
cope in their own ways and show the audience how post traumatic war is something very common. The
audience will feel empathy towards these people due to the way the director structuralized the videos and
put them all together in a row. Structure of the order of videos is really important when it comes to this
documentary to show the importance of post traumatic war disorder. Not only does it show how common it is
when the director puts so many people with the same global issue in a row together but also how impactful it
is to our world today. Trauma is difficult to represent and throughout these videos you could see raw footage
of men talking about their experiences related to war although most aren't the same wars they still all left
them with trauma which is shown differently in every video through their eyes with the help of the camera
angle being a vantage point. This brings back to me saying that the director's intention and his tone shows
how passionate he was towards this documentary to show how many people go through this global issue. He
lets us see the differences on how people can be going through the same issue but grief differently by putting
the videos in order as I mentioned earlier. This all gives a sympathetic mood to the audience since the
audience has the ability to connect towards the people talking through the help of the eyes and vantage point
as mentioned.

CONCLUSION
(30 sec.)

● Reflect on the global issue and how it is explored in the text you have chosen.
○ NO NEED TO REPEAT YOUR ANALYSIS HERE
○ Refer to both the specific text and the wider work.
● Final reflection on the global issue and its relevance in the world today...why is this important?
In conclusion, post traumatic war disorder is a very common global issue that is still happening to this day.
The fields of trauma are being explored in our original clip and relating it to the wider body of work. The first
clip being analyzed shows a man who went through post traumatic disorder and how he copes with his
trauma.Following that this relates to the body of work that portrays people who went through the same
trauma who all cope in a different way. Both of these texts are valuable since the director structure shows the
impact post traumatic war disorder leaves on nott just one person but multiple people. This leaves the
audience with nothing but sympathy for the trauma being left with those people and how common it is.
