Assignment in Rizal for Finals 1

1. Where did Rizal go after he arrived in the Philippines?

He arrived in Manila with his sister Lucia. Afternoon at 4:00 o’clock he went to Malacañang Palace to
seek audience with the Spanish governor-general, General Eulogio Despujol. Then he visited his friends from
Central Luzon and discussed the problems affecting their people and took the opportunity to greet them
personally. Then he returned to manila.

2. How did Rizal handle the situation about the case filed against him
by the church and the government?
Rizal does not question the jurisdiction of the court. First, He has nothing to amend except that
during his exile in Dapitan in 1892, he had not dealt in political matters. Second, He has nothing to
admit on the charges against him. Lastly, He had nothing to admit on the declarations of the
witnesses, he had not met nor knew, against him. He pleaded his innocence but he was still
convicted on all three charges of rebellion, sedition, and conspiracy and sentenced to death.

3. Why did Rizal create the La Liga Filipina?

La Liga Filipina in Manila on July 3, 1892 was formed not for the purpose of independence,
but for mutual aid and protection of its members, and the fostering of a more united spirit among
Filipinos. Its constitution declared the ends, form, duties of members and officials, rights of members
and officials, the investment of funds, and general rules.

4. What are the AIMS of the La Liga Filipina?

The aims of La Liga Filipina are the following: First is to unite the whole archipelago into one
society with equality for Filipinos and Spaniards in the Philippines. Second is mutual protection in
every want and need. Third is defense against all violence and injustice. Lastly, encouragement of
instruction, agriculture, and commerce; and Study and application of reforms.

5. Why was the La Liga Filipina dissolved as an organization? What

organization was formed after La Liga Filipina? What were the AIMS of
the new organization?
Due to Rizal arrest, La Liga Filipina became inactive. Then it was reorganized by Domingo
Franco and Andres Bonifacio. The Liga membership split into two groups: the conservatives formed
the “Cuerpo de Compromisarios” which pledged to continue supporting the La Solidaridad while the
radicals led by Bonifacio devoted themselves to a new and secret society, “the Katipunan”, which
Bonifacio had organized on the very day Rizal was deported to Dapitan. Its main objective was
separation of the Philippines from Spain and, at the same time, the development of Filipinos as
citizens of their nation once independence was achieved.
