Section 13 HYDRAULIC POWER SYSTEMS

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
GENERAL
The aircraft is equipped with four independent Hydraulic Power Systems, and each system is driven
by a parallel-equipped Engine Driven Pump (EDP) and Demand Pump. Each Hydraulic System is
distinguished by the same number as the Engine Number. Each System that drives is as follows.

·Primary Flight Controls · ·Landing Gear

Autopilot Servo ·Flaps
· Spoilers ·Brakes
·Stabilizer Trim ·Steering
· Elevator Feel · Thrust Reverser

POWER SOURCES
Each System is equipped with an Engine Driven Pump (EDP) as a Primary Power Source. Each
System also has a Demand Pump that supplements the EDP during high Demand Conditions, and
the Demand Pump can supply the hydraulic pressure required by the normal System when the EDP
or Engine fails.

System 1 and 4 are equipped with Air Driven Demand Pump (ADP).
Pneumatic power for ADP is supplied by all four Engines and/or APUs from the Bleed
Air Manifold.

System 2 and 3 are equipped with Electric Motor Driven Pump (EDP).
In addition to the EDP and Demand Pump, System 4 also has an auxiliary Electric Pump
used during Ground Handling.

EDP is pressurized by turning the Engine Pump Switch ON, and depressurized by turning the
Switch OFF or pulling the Engine Fire Switch.

Demand Pump Selector has three Positions, ON, OFF and AUTO.
If it is turned ON, the pump will be driven continuously, and if it is turned OFF, the pump will be
inoperative. In AUTO, the Demand Pump is driven when the EDP Pump output becomes Low
Pressure, the Fuel Control Switch is set to CUTOFF, or the Engine Fire Switch is pulled.

In addition, the System 1 and System 4 Demand Pumps will operate when the Flap is In
Transit or In Flight in any position other than UP.

When System 4 Demand Pump Selector is in AUX Position and Aircraft is On Ground,
when EDP and ADP Pump output becomes Low Pressure, AC Auxiliary Pump drives
continuously and Demand Pump turns OFF.

Even if EDP pressurizes System, Demand Pump Selector does not trip from AUX to
OFF.

MESSAGE KIND DESCRIPTIONS

HYD PRESS SYS Caution When System Pressure becomes Low.
HYD PRESS ENG Advisory When the EDP Pressure output goes low.
If one or more of the following conditions occur: ·
Demand Pump Selector is in OFF Position. ·When the
Demand Pump is commanding Run and the Pump
HYD PRESS DEM Advisory
output becomes Low Pressure.
·When System 4 Demand Pump Selector is in AUX
Position.

EICAS Caution Message If HYD PRESS SYS is in Hydraulic Low Pressure System state,
individual Pump Low Pressure Message will be inhibited.

The Hydraulic Control Panel installed in the Overhead Panel incorporates a System
Fault Light for each System that illuminates when one or more of the following
conditions occur:

·Low System Pressure

·Low System Quantity
·System Overheat

Panel incorporates Pressure Light which instructs the Low Pressure output about each
Pump and Operate Switch of each Pump.

FLUID SUPPLY
An independent Reservoir provides Fluid Supply to each Hydraulic System.
Reservoir is pressurized by Bleed Air System to prevent Pump cavitation and provide
sufficient Positive Flow in High Demand Condition.

Reservoir Quantity is displayed on the EICAS Status Display and Hydraulic Synoptic Display.

EICAS Advisory Message HYD QTY HALF is displayed when each System Fluid
Quantity reaches half (0.5) of Normal Service Level.
Also, when each System Fluid Quantity becomes Low, EICAS Advisory Message HYD
QTY LOW is displayed and Hydraulic System Fault Light is illuminated.

When the Reservoir Quantity reaches the Rrefill Level or below and a refill is required, the
characters RF will be displayed next to the Reservoir Quantity Indication display. In addition, this RF
character is inhibited in In Flight.
When a System Low Condition occurs, RF changes to LO characters. EICAS Advisory
Message HYD QTY LOW inhibits EICAS Advisory Message HYD QTY HALF.

Hydraulic Quantity Level fluctuates when equipment using Hydraulic Power is activated and
with changes in temperature.

RSVR PRESS is displayed next to Reservoir Symbol on Synoptic Display when

Reservoir Bleed Air Pressure becomes Low.

EICAS Status and Synoptic Display show Fluid Ttemperature.

When Fluid Temperature becomes excessive, EICAS Advisory Message HYD OVHT SYS is
displayed and Hydraulic System Fault Light is illuminated.

The Fluid Supply Line to each EDP is equipped with a Hydraulic Fluid Shutoff Valve. When the
Engine Fire Switch is pulled, the Hydraulic Fluid Shutoff Valve is closed, the EDP is
depressurized and the Demand Pump is driven.

LOAD ASSIGNMENTS
Systems 1 and 4 drive the Trailing Edge Flap, Landing Gear, Normal Brakes (SYS 4),
Alternate Brakes (SYS 1), Steering, and their respective Thrust Reversers.

Systems 1 and 4 also provide redundant power to Primary Flight Control.

Systems 2 and 3 drive Primary Flight Control, Stabilizer Trim, Elevator Feel, and their
respective Thrust Reversers.
System 2 also drives the Lower Yaw Damper while Altrnate Brakes and System 3
drive the Upper Yaw Damper.

Systems 1, 2 and 3 drive the Center, Right and Left Autopilot Servo while Systems 2, 3
and 4 drive the Spoiler.
