When I was younger, I could only read black and white characters. I didn't
understand why or how someone could be so nasty; I imagined they were villains
because they did horrible things alone to satisfy their own interests. I used to think
villains were created only to be evil. I understood that ethically dubious characters
exist in real life after seeing Maleficent. I recognized how someone, for example, me,
could make such hasty decisions without knowing the whole picture. Maleficent, I
learned, is a being capable of making mistakes, which she exploits to exact revenge
and atonement.
