Introduction
The project is devoted to the static analysis water tank. Three different thicknesses of walls of
the water tank are proposed and the structure is analysed in order to find appropriate stress and
deformation states of structure. A complete result of displacement and stress values are needed to
prove your analysis and all findings must be written in a report. You need to draw the water tank
and develop the geometry file and perform the linear static analysis to the water tank to analyze
the baseline model. The material properties must be obtained from the published journal papers.
The decision on the thickness of the water tank, loads and constraints should be made through
your observation of the actual condition. You may vary the values of the water tank and loads
accordingly as to strengthen your results analysis and discussion of the water tank. Example of
water tanks as below.
The dimensions of the water tank were taken according to Pavol Lengvarsky journal. The
diameter of the water tank is one meter and the height is two meters. The material of the water
tank is made of stainless steel. The Young’s modulus, Passion ration and density of the stainless
steel are 1.95(10)³, 0.27 and 8000 kg/m³, respectively. In addition, three different thicknesses of
3mm, 5mm and 8mm were selected. (PAVOL, 2015)

Discussion
The water tank is 2m-long diameter and 2m-high. The water tank is loaded by 20-kPa
pressure perpendicular to the wall surface. The Young’s modulus is 1.95(10)³, the Passion ration
is 0.27 and the density of the stainless steel is 8000-kg/m³. the water tank is fixed supported from
the bottom. (PAVOL, 2015)

The water tank is modelled as three dimensional plate with three different thicknesses of 3mm,
5mm and 8mm. The x-y plane surface is modelled using subdivide (number of subdivision R =
10, S = 1, T = 1). The total number of elements is 912 elements. The unit used in this model is a
consistent SI unit:
Length: m E: N/m2, therefore the Young’s Modulus is 195000 N/m2
Force: N, the applied force is pressure force which equivalents to 20000N (PAVOL, 2015)

Constraints
The water tank is fixed supported from the bottom. Therefore, there will not be in
displacement in the Z-axis and Y-axis also x- axis where is fixed from the bottom which means
the displacement will not occur from bottom. (PAVOL, 2015)

Therefore , the deformation will occur in top surface and sides surface
5

Results:
A) 3mm thickness;
The displacement occur in Z-axis is equal to 0.0006825 and the Von Mises stress is equal to
7774 kPa.
6

B) 5-mm thickness
The displacement occur is equal to 0.0002273 and the Von Mises stress is equal to 4669 kPa.
7

C) 8mm thickness
The displacement occurs is equivalent to and the Von Mises is equal to
8

Conclusion:
It can be seen that as the thickness of the water tank walls increases, Von Mises stresses
decrease. In addition, the displacement of the water tank walls increases as the thickness
decreases.
