ABSTRACT

This thesis presents the study on seismic effects of L-shape RC building for
gravity loads and lateral loads in different seismic zones. The main objective of this
thesis is to compare the seismic response of L-shape RC building in seismic zones
2A, 3 and 4. The superstructure of proposed buildings is designed and analyzed by
using Extended Three Dimensional Analysis of Building Systems (ETABS) software.
The superstructure of the proposed building with special moment resisting frame is
used. The dimension of L-shape building is 84 ft long and 70 ft width. The structure is
60 ft above ground level and five storey building. Typical storey height is 12 ft.
Earthquake loads are reference from Uniform Building Code (UBC-97). The
proposed buildings are designed to resist gravity loads and lateral loads to overall
stability in accordance with ACI 318-99 code. From analysis results, storey drift,
storey displacement and storey shear are compared. And then, torsion, shear force,
bending moment and axial force of beams and columns members are compared of
proposed buildings. From the result, the storey drift of L-shape building increases as
the earthquake zones increases at a rate of 68.73%, 100% in X-directions and 68.71%,
99.91% in Y-directions. The storey displacement of L-shape building increases as the
earthquake zones increases at a rate of 68.76%, 100.01% in X-directions and 68.75%,
99.99% in Y-directions. The storey shear of L-shape building increases as the
earthquake zones increases at a rate of 68.75%, 99.99% in X-directions and 68.76%,
100% in Y-directions.
