LITERACY/SAESNEG

Writing
David has made great progress in literacy this year. Throughout the year, he has shown that he can write for
different purposes and is beginning to choose words for variety and interest. During our Terrible Tudor topic,
David created a detailed newspaper report about the Spanish Armada. After discussions, he used alliteration
and rhyme to write a catchy headline and presented the events in chronological order. However, to progress
further, he must keep reading his work back to ensure it makes sense. When story writing, David develops his
ideas in a sequence of sentences and uses verbs, adverbs and adjectives to capture the reader’s imagination.
He takes pride with his presentation and uses full stops, capital letters and question marks accurately. He now
needs to use speech marks and commas without being prompted.

Oracy
Although David always listens carefully in class and is keen to share his ideas, he doesn’t always show a full
understanding of what has been said. During our rainforest topic, he created a detailed weather forecast and
showed confidence when presenting it to the class. He explained his information using the relevant vocabulary
and spoke clearly, varying his expression to help the listeners. Well done! When David shares his ‘Show and
Tell’ in front of the class he always has something interesting to say. He now needs to add more detail and
organise what he is saying so that listeners have a full and detailed understanding.

Reading
David has made super progress with his reading and this is also apparent in his National Reading Test raw
score; it has been lovely to see his enthusiasm and confidence grow throughout the year. He uses a variety of
strategies for decoding unknown words, allowing him to read independently and establish meaning. During our
Terrible Tudor topic, David used contents pages and indexes to find the information he needed. He now needs
to locate the information quicker by scanning the page for keywords. David showed concentration when reading
non-fiction books to research information about pollution. He was then able to use the information to produce
a detailed leaflet. However, David must now write what he has learnt in his own words to show a greater
understanding of the text.

NUMERACY/MATHEMATEG
Number
David shows a solid understanding of place value in numbers up to 1000 and uses this to add and subtract
numbers mentally. He enjoys the challenge of problem solving and was confident recalling his 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10
times tables to solve multiplication and division problems based on the Tudors. However, in order to answer the
questions faster, he must learn his tables for instant recall. This will also help him in the National Reasoning
Tests where time is limited. David uses different combinations of money to pay for shopping up to £2 and can
calculate the change using written methods. He now needs to become more confident calculating the amount of
change in his head.

Shape, Data and Measures

David is becoming confident telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analogue clock and working out how
many minutes to the next hour. He now needs to learn to read hours and minutes on a 24 hour digital clock.
David uses his maths skills during science investigations to present his findings in a clear way. He records his
results in tables and constructs bar charts with ease. However, he does need to be reminded about the
importance of titles and labels so that he can interpret the data easily.

Numerical Reasoning
During our reasoning lessons and in the National Numerical Reasoning Test, David has shown that he is
becoming more confident identifying the information needed to complete the task. However to be able to work
with more independence, he must show more confidence when selecting the appropriate techniques to use to
reach an answer. David can transfer mathematical skills to a variety of tasks in class, for example during DT
lessons. He now needs to develop his checking strategies to decide if his answers are reasonable.

SCIENCE/GWYDDONIAETH
David enthusiastically participates in science lessons. Throughout the year he has enjoyed carrying out
many investigations, particularly the investigation looking at which habitats woodlice prefer. During this
investigation, David put forward his own well-thought out ideas about how to answer the question and
planned the method of enquiry. He makes his own predictions about what he thinks is going to happen, but
now needs to give reasons for his predictions without being prompted. David was able to follow a series of
instructions safely when exploring electrical circuits. In order to build on the progress he has made this
year, next year David must add more detail when explaining why he got his results. Throughout our pollution
topic, David was able to find information in selected books and on chosen websites to explain the damage
pollution causes. During our Killer Cats and Habitats topic, David used his knowledge to sort, group and
compare a range of minibeasts and was confident describing the reasons for his groupings. He now needs to
use the relevant scientific language in his explanations.
WELSH (2nd Language)/CYMRAEG (Ail Iaith) Miss Stott
David has shown that he can ask and answer a range of questions, showing some variation in vocabulary. He
is confident asking for, understanding and communicating personal information and can hold a short
conversation in a role play situation. David can express opinions simply and is beginning to give various
reasons. David is able to write about himself fairly accurately and on the whole, capital letters, question
marks and full stops are used correctly. He is beginning to write short basic sentences using suitable and
familiar vocabulary and patterns, but now needs to ensure that words are spelt correctly. David reads
simple texts quite clearly and enjoys reading scripts out loud and adds the relevant expression.
PERSONAL AND SOCIAL EDUCATION/ADDYSG GYMDEITHASOL A PERSONOL
During circle time, David listens carefully and responds to his friends’ worries or concerns with increasing
appropriateness. When discussing sensitive topics he has shown that he understands other children’s
feelings and with encouragement, shares his own ideas and opinions. David joins in debates about what is
right and wrong and understands that he is responsible for his own actions.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY/TECHNOLEG GWYBODAETH Miss Stott
David enjoys ICT and is confident using it for a variety of purposes. He uses ICT to present his work in
different ways and can save and retrieve it when needed. David can use word packages to combine text
with graphics, cutting and pasting images from other sources correctly. David really enjoyed creating a
PowerPoint this term, he was able to add text, images and animate them to make his slide show exciting and
presented his work to the class. He is confident using internet search engines to research information and
can explain how to stay safe online.
DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY/TECHNOLEG DYLUNIO
David has thoroughly enjoyed making a picture frame and baking this year. When designing and making, he
asks questions and suggests ideas for making things based on his examination of familiar products. David
uses pictures and words to convey what it is he wants to do and explains what he likes or dislikes about his
final product. He uses simple tools to cut, shape and join materials and uses utensils to mix ingredients.
GEOGRAPHY/DAEARYDDIAETH
In Geography this year David has studied Wrexham and the Macapà rainforest. He can use Google Earth
and Google Maps to locate and research different locations. David can describe the main physical and
human features of these places and is aware that they have similar and different characteristics. He can
draw a map using keys and symbols and is becoming more confident with directions.
HISTORY/HANES
David has thoroughly enjoyed developing his historical skills, knowledge and understanding this year
through our study of the Tudor period. He is familiar with some of the people during this period and is
confident giving reasons for the main events and changes. David has identified some of the different ways
in which the past is represented, used historical sources to ask and answer questions and communicated his
understanding in a variety of ways.
ART/CELF Mrs Aldridge
We have been studying portrait paintings from the Tudor period during our art lessons this term. David has
David Vasile July 2019 Miss Jones
shown an ability to sketch and paint in this style, skilfully using proportion and detail to make realistic
copies of Henry VIII and his wives. He compiled an Autumn painting, successfully mixing primary colours to
create secondary colours while also reflecting on this work identifying strengths and possible future
improvements.
MUSIC/CERDDORIAETH Mrs Aldridge
David has demonstrated his ability to listen attentively and appreciate a wide range of music. He is
beginning to work with others to create compositions that have a simple musical shape. He is also able to
play an instrumental part in group compilations with a limited range of notes. David is always enthusiastic in
lessons and enjoys singing in tune to class songs.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION/ADDYSG GORFFOROL
During games, David is aware of the basic techniques and is beginning to use these in small-sided games.
David tries hard in athletics and is beginning to describe how his body feels when exercising. In dance and
gymnastics, David remembers and repeats short sequences with some changes in level, direction or speed.
With support, he recognises the basic principles underpinning adventurous activities and enjoys
teambuilding exercises. David has gained in confidence as a swimmer and now needs to develop his
technique of front crawl and backstroke without the aid of a float.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION/ADDYSG GREFYDDOL Mrs Aldridge
David can describe and illustrate the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the crucifixion. He can
also orally recount the way Christians celebrate the festivals of Harvest and Easter. He demonstrates
understanding regarding the differences in religious beliefs, namely Christianity and Judaism, by
contributing intelligently to class and group discussion.

GENERAL COMMENTS/SYLWADAU CYFFREDINOL

When David first started Year 3 he found it difficult to settle down to independent work quickly. He would
be constantly getting out of his chair to come and ask me answers to questions that he already knew and
would struggle to get tasks completed in the given time. What a change in a year! He is now quick to start
his work and has grown in confidence. David has a close circle of friends who he always gets on with and is
always there to cheer them up when they are sad. I will really miss David’s big smile and our daily chats
about computer programming and his YouTube videos. He has taught me a lot! Thank you David. I look
forward to hearing how he is getting on in Year 4.
