Writing
David has made great progress in literacy this year. Throughout the year, he has shown that he can write for
different purposes and is beginning to choose words for variety and interest. During our Terrible Tudor topic,
David created a detailed newspaper report about the Spanish Armada. After discussions, he used alliteration
and rhyme to write a catchy headline and presented the events in chronological order. However, to progress
further, he must keep reading his work back to ensure it makes sense. When story writing, David develops his
ideas in a sequence of sentences and uses verbs, adverbs and adjectives to capture the reader’s imagination.
He takes pride with his presentation and uses full stops, capital letters and question marks accurately. He now
needs to use speech marks and commas without being prompted.
Oracy
Although David always listens carefully in class and is keen to share his ideas, he doesn’t always show a full
understanding of what has been said. During our rainforest topic, he created a detailed weather forecast and
showed confidence when presenting it to the class. He explained his information using the relevant vocabulary
and spoke clearly, varying his expression to help the listeners. Well done! When David shares his ‘Show and
Tell’ in front of the class he always has something interesting to say. He now needs to add more detail and
organise what he is saying so that listeners have a full and detailed understanding.
Reading
David has made super progress with his reading and this is also apparent in his National Reading Test raw
score; it has been lovely to see his enthusiasm and confidence grow throughout the year. He uses a variety of
strategies for decoding unknown words, allowing him to read independently and establish meaning. During our
Terrible Tudor topic, David used contents pages and indexes to find the information he needed. He now needs
to locate the information quicker by scanning the page for keywords. David showed concentration when reading
non-fiction books to research information about pollution. He was then able to use the information to produce
a detailed leaflet. However, David must now write what he has learnt in his own words to show a greater
understanding of the text.
NUMERACY/MATHEMATEG
Number
David shows a solid understanding of place value in numbers up to 1000 and uses this to add and subtract
numbers mentally. He enjoys the challenge of problem solving and was confident recalling his 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10
times tables to solve multiplication and division problems based on the Tudors. However, in order to answer the
questions faster, he must learn his tables for instant recall. This will also help him in the National Reasoning
Tests where time is limited. David uses different combinations of money to pay for shopping up to £2 and can
calculate the change using written methods. He now needs to become more confident calculating the amount of
change in his head.
Numerical Reasoning
During our reasoning lessons and in the National Numerical Reasoning Test, David has shown that he is
becoming more confident identifying the information needed to complete the task. However to be able to work
with more independence, he must show more confidence when selecting the appropriate techniques to use to
reach an answer. David can transfer mathematical skills to a variety of tasks in class, for example during DT
lessons. He now needs to develop his checking strategies to decide if his answers are reasonable.
