“When Nietzsche Wept” is a movie about a doctor called Joseph Breuer tried to help

Freidirch Nietzshc with his migraine attacks and a broken heart at the request of Lou Salome, a

famous Russian poet. However, as the film moves on, Joseph and Nietzsche are both helping

each other’s problems. Joseph for his despair when he fell in love with Bertha (former patient)

and Nietzsche for his body and mind. Finally, as the movie came to the ending, Joseph realized

that all he wanted was a change, a different lifestyle. Instead of becoming a doctor and marrying

his wife, he wanted to know the consequence of him moving forward to Bertha, which result in

him becoming a waiter and the loss of family. As for Nietzsche, he feels relief for the first time

in a long time about being open with his feelings about loneliness to Joseph. The two friends

shared a hug before Nietzsche left for his mission, which I believe in writing about Thus Spoke

Zarathustra.

The only two times I could recall of Nietzsche speaking of Thus Spoke Zarathustra is at

the beginning of the movie, Nietzsche was lecturing about how God is dead. We have killed him,

a reference to “God is Dead,” and when Nietzsche talked to Joseph about how he came too soon,

a comparison to how Zarathustra came too soon and people couldn’t understand his words. The

only issue I have with the movie is that I couldn’t understand why Lou chose Nietzsche’s best

friend over him when she thinks he is fascinated. Women are indeed very complicated.
