WHAT A TEST!
A poor young artist was asked to paint the portrait of a rich lady and he did his best to
make a good picture. When the portrait was finished it was shown to lady’s friends. Some
of them thought it was too realistic. They were afraid the lady would not like the picture.
But the painter felt that he had been successful. He didn’t want to change anything.
Then one of his friends suggested the following: “We’ll leave it to the lady’s dog to
decide if the picture is good or bad.” The next day the picture was sent to the lady’s house.
The friends gathered to see the result of the test. As soon as the dog was brought before the
portrait it began to lick it all over.
Everybody congratulated the painter. Nobody knew that the painter had spread some
bacon all over the picture!

SAND AND STONE
A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During the journey
they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got
slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: “Today my best friend
slapped me in the face”.
They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath.
The one, who had been slapped, got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend
saved him. After the friend recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone, “Today
my best friend saved my life”.
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, “After I hurt you,
you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why? The other friend replied, “When
someone hurts us, we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it
away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where
no wind can ever erase it”.

Antiques are big business today, and there are now lots of popular TV programmes

AN INTERESTING RACE
There have been a lot of famous cheats in sporting history, even in the most famous
sporting event of them all, the Olympic Games. In 1904, the Olympic Games were in St
Louis and in the marathon race there were some very interesting competitors!
It was a very hot August day and more than half of the runners didn't start because it
was so hot. The winner of the race was Fred Lorz. Everyone cheered when he finished and
he accepted the prize. But he said later that he hadn't run all the way! He ran the first nine
miles but then he got tired and got into a car for the next eleven miles. Then he got out and
finished the race! So, he couldn't be the winner. The person in the second place was Thomas
Hicks but then they discovered that he had used drugs to help him continue the race!
Another runner in the race was Felix Carvajar. His story was very strange too. While he
was running he became hungry and he stopped to eat some apples from the trees in a
garden. The fruit was bad and he was sick! But he had a rest and then continued the race.
He came fourth.
