Definition: To continue doing an activity

Example: Learning English can be challenging sometimes,


but you need to carry on.

Definition: To use something completely, so there is


nothing left

Example: We ran out of gas, so we had to walk back


home.
4) Work out

Definition: To exercise

Example: I work out three times a week at a gym nearby.

5) Get by

Definition: To survive; To manage with difficulty to


accomplish something

Example: I'm not super fluent in French, but I get by.

6) Come up with

Definition: To create something

Example: We had to come up with a story to share in front


of the class.
7) Look into

Definition: To investigate or examine carefully

Example: I'll look into this and get back to you.

8) Take up

Definition: To start an activity, like a hobby for example

Example: I decided to take up guitar lessons.

Definition: To leave school or college before graduating

10) Wrap up

Definition: To finish an activity, or to end your working day

Example: On Wednesdays, I like to wrap up my day earlier.

Definition: Used to express the result or consequence of


something

Example: I was late, so I ended up missing the meeting.

12) Put off

Definition: To postpone or procrastinate

Example: I always put off writing reports until the last


minute.
13) Hang out

Definition: To spend time with someone, usually a friend or


family member

Example: I love to hang out with my friends on Saturday


night.

14) Look after

Definition: To take care of someone or something

Example: As the older brother, I had to look after my


siblings when we were younger.

15) Find out

Definition: To discover a fact or piece of information

Example: After years working as a Lawyer, I found out I


always wanted to be a Designer.

Definition: To choose something out of two or more


options

Example: I could have either studied Business or


Architecture, but I went for Business.

17) Lay off

Definition: To fire someone, usually because of external


factors such as the economy, the company's financial
situation, etc.

Example: Many people were laid off during the pandemic.

18) Be up for

Definition: To want to do something, or to be in the mood


to do something

Example: Are you up for a movie tonight?


19) Come across

Definition: To give off a certain impression

Example: When I first met him, he came across as a bit


arrogant to me.

20) Patch up

Definition: To fix the problems in a relationship

Example: After years not talking to each other, they finally


were able to patch things up.

21) Cut down

Definition: To reduce something

Example: My Doctor advised me to cut down on sugar.


22) Give in

Definition: To agree to what someone wants

Example: I wanted to watch Spider-Man but my wife


wanted to watch This is Us. In the end, I gave in and we
watched This is Us together.

23) Take after

Definition: To look alike, resemble or be similar to someone

Example: Everybody says my daughter takes after her


mother, but I'm not so sure.
