CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background information

It should be stated that warehouse is an irreplaceable expense in Logistics operation. It

allows for not only timely delivery and optimized distribution, but also errors reduction in

fulfillment process. As a result, Warehouse management encompasses the principles and

processes involved in running the day-to-day operations at a high level. This activity includes

receiving and organizing warehouse space, scheduling labor, managing inventory and fulfilling

orders.

This report would be devided into 3 main sections in order to further demonstrate the

benefit of warehouse in a specific region – Can Tho City and its influences during the

pandemic. Firstly is the database of .. when detailed information of capacity, pallets,

technologies application would be collected. In the second part, we would analyze the

warehouse activities in a well-known Logistics service provider – Nguyen Ngoc Logistics.

Finally, the impact of Covid-19 in warehouse management would be experienced in both sides.

1.2 Scope and limitations

The most concerned problems in this project would be data collection. Although Can

Tho is the economic center of the Mekong Delta, the data of warehouse location is inadequate

on the internet as well as social media. Consequently, all members found difficult to search and

filter appropriate data in order to complete the required database. However, after completing

this task, we could achieve an upgraded espertise in searching and scheming information.

CHAPTER III: WAREHOUSE ACTIVITIES OF NGUYEN NGOC

LOGISTICS

Nguyen Ngoc Logistic Joint Stock Company was established in 2005. Over 14 years of

formation and development, Nguyen Ngoc Company has initially achieved significant success

in logistics market, moreover, brand Nguyen Ngoc (NNL) is known to many customers and

partners with prestige, service quality is placed first. Additionally, this company has achieved

a high reputation for its large serving of multi-industry corporations in Vietnam such as

Petrosetco, Vinamilk, Cocacola, Vingroup, Thegioididong, Budweiser Beer, etc.

3.2 Service

Understanding the heat and significant potential in logistics market, Nguyen Ngoc Logistics

has dedicated itself to develop the most advanced and flexible logistics solutions, especially in

warehousing services when it fully uses the large warehouse spaces and modern equipment,

which will support the management, inventory, distribution, loading and unloading... Services

3.3 Advanced technology application

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh - General Director of Nguyen Ngoc Logistics, said:

"Technology has changed the composition in logistics market. Therefore, investing in the

Warehouse Management System (WMS) in order to monitor, manage and optimize schedules

for vehicles, logistics or carriers is one of specialized technologies that we are applying and

experiencing daily.”

A WMS primarily aims to control the movement and storage of materials within a

warehouse and process the associated transactions, including shipping, receiving, put-away and

picking. Moreover, WMS is a database driven computer application, to improve the efficiency

of the warehouse by directing cutaways and to maintain accurate inventory by recording

warehouse transactions. The systems also direct and optimize stock based on real-time

information about the status of bin utilization. Once data has been collected, there is either

batch synchronization with, or a real-time wireless transmission to a central database. The

database can then provide useful reports about the status of goods in the warehouse.

3.4 Equipment

In general, Nguyen Ngoc Logistics operates their warehouse to enhance effectiveness

of their warehousing productivity as accurate product navigation and in-house driving.

a/ Pallet

Pallets are an iconic part of any warehouse or supply chain. It is a flat that is used for

handling transport, storing goods or transporting freight. A pallet is usually secured to prevent

damage. Without a corresponding pallet, goods are in danger of getting faulty during transport.

b/ Pallet jack

A pallet jack is the most basic form of forklift. This could be found in warehouses and

is used for lifting and transporting small loads for short distances.

c/ Forklift

In the industry of machinery, Forklift is a device capable of lifting and moving, making

loading and unloading goods easier. Most forklifts in a warehouse can carry loads of one to

five tons. Lifting greater weights, such as filled shipping containers, requires larger machines

with lift capacities up to 50 tons.

d/ Reach lift truck

Forklift used in narrow aisle applications could be stated as reach lift truck. It is

designed to have two outer legs and a single set of wheels in the back, which allows operators

to navigate smaller spaces, and still be able to reach higher racking.

3.5 Layout

Overall, Nguyen Ngoc Logistics uses 4-way entries (perimeter base) for their

warehouse. Their warehouse layout is mainly combined in batches of many pallets of the same

products of the same company at a specific location. In addition, the more frequently these

products are consumed, the nearer the location it is placed at the entering door of the warehouse.

Therefore, it creates an opportunity for the workers to move it easily as well as save time in

picking these products.

3.6 Challenges

In the business development, Nguyen Ngoc logistics has faced challenges that would be

described as follows:

a/ The lack of diverse kinds of warehouses

It should be stressed that the more logistics companies appear, the more

competitiveness existed. As a result, there would be more pressure for enterprises to draw the

attention of their services. However, based on the given information, Nguyen Ngoc Logistics

has been disadvantageous as they abandoned hidden features of warehousing and mostly focus

on the parking lot for trucks and containers. Additionally, Nguyen Ngoc Logistics has not

owned much cold storages over the country, which makes them fallen behind the competition.

b/ Centralizing warehouses

There are limited centralized warehouse destinations as Binh Duong and Dong Nai

province. The enterprise ignored some potential neighboring locations, for example Ha Noi,

Ho Chi Minh City... Centralizing the warehouse results in the rise of cost in outbound shipment

and shipping timeline. Consequently, it would be impossible for rush delivery and the

enterprise must experienced a high payment in transportation monthly. The best solutions so

far would be additional warehouses construction, but it is going to cost lots of expense and

time. The other solution is NNL should focus on the strength of centralized warehouses, which

is better customer service and more efficiency in operation management.

3.7 Opportunities

a/ Warehouse location

Can Tho is an important position connecting the South and the Western provinces (Mekong

Delta), which is considered as the gateway to the lower Mekong region. Therefore, building

warehouse here would achieve a long-term benefits for evolution. Logistics services and

economic development would be expanded in these areas instead of just concentration in

familiar regions as Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong,...

b/ High investment in warehouse system

Nguyễn Ngọc Logistic achieve a dynamic logistics network in Can Tho with 3 warehouses,

having a total area of more than 12,000m2, whose investment cost up to 10 millions USD. It

can be stressed that owning large capacity of warehouse could gain benefits in a long run, when

it is possible to store kinds of products with high quantities, which can meet the various demand

of customers.

Moreover, the undeniable advantage of advanced technologies application in

transportation, management and warehousing could tramendously highlight NNL in the

market. They have applied WMS (warehouse management system), Express System and TMS

(Transport management system). Especially, they mostly focus on the Warehouse Management

System (WMS). It aims to control the movement and storage of materials within a warehouse

and process the associated transactions, including shipping, receiving, put-away and picking.

Moreover, WMS is a database driven computer application, to improve the efficiency of the

warehouse.

c/ Young staff, high potential

Finally, Young staff, high potential is a great opportunity for NNL nowaday. They have

been constructing young staff from multinational corporations, with intensive training in

specialized knowledge from abroad is also one of the important factors that help Nguyễn Ngọc

Logistics stand firm and assert position in today's challenging market.

CHAPTER IV: THE IMPACTS OF COVID – 19

4.1 Positive influence

a/ Warehouse and fulfillment center:

The first positive impact of Covid 19 is the change in the warehouse and the fulfillment

center operation in general. Due to the pandemic, consumer behavior has had a propensity for

online shopping. This trend leads to a substantial number of goods which need storing.

Currently, the manufacturers’ warehouse cannot adapt extra storage immediately. It will cost

twice to build a new warehouse, especially a cold one on specification. Therefore, companies

recently choose to leverage the third party, such as 3PL Logistics, hiring outside warehouses

will not only solve the shortage of space in producers’ warehouses but also increase the revenue

for 3PL Logistics company.

Equally importantly, this pandemic has revolutionized a new era of technology in

warehouse operation. Labor shortage and social distancing requirement boosted the adoption

of technology solutions. Autonomous technology is one of these solutions that has been

promoted by many enterprises. A sudden innovation will result in the consumption of

prohibitive money to invest in the modern technology system; however, the benefits

overwhelm the drawbacks. The application of robots in warehouse performance can not only

increase productivity, alleviate human errors but also recoup the lack of human resources when

consequences such as a pandemic, natural disaster happen. Especially, the investment in

automatic chain of fulfillment centers at strategic locations such as the Mekong Delta Region

would accelerate the regional economy.

b/ Cold warehouse:

There is no doubt that the need for fresh food, and vegetables have escalated

unexpectedly due to the lockdown. The severe shortage of employees in the field of delivery

causes demand congestion. Hence, most products cannot be delivered to the residents and are

reserved in the cold warehouse. Moreover, to avoid the spread-out of the epidemic, the vaccine

has been ordered a substantial amount. Account for its feature, temperature in cold warehouse

needs set in precise number degree in order not to ruin it. Therefore, these factors lead to the

remarkable growth of cold storage during the pandemic.

4.2 Negative influence

Nevertheless, there is incontrovertible evidence that this virus had caused the disruption in

the supply chain around the world. Some remarkable features could be listed as: the existence

of social distancing lasted for 6-month, the compulsory of wearing masks, the limited distance

among people in the public space as well as the hand sanitizer. As the changes and strict rules

taken place promptly, leading the whole supply chain stagnantly. In particular, one of the most

significant factors in the supply chain is the warehouse, especially in Vietnam, which also is

suffered from the supply chain around the world.

a/ The fixed cost needed to be paid monthly

Due to the supply chain disruption background, business activities of various business

models was distracted, especially the warehouses around Vietnam. As a result, it brokes the

company stills pay fixed cost monthly such as taxes, rent cost, and some other relevant cost

relating to inventories and maintenance of the goods stored at the warehouse that could be

expired or broken. Therefore, it could damage the financial status of the company when they

could not generate the revenue but still pay the cost, and consequently, some small and medium

companies that do not have good financial status go bankrupt.

b/ The change in layout and design of the warehouse

Because of following the 5K rules in Vietnam, some warehouses need to adapt for

protecting the workers as well as continuing operating without violating the rules of the

government. By increasing the spaces for workers to work in and keeping a two meters distance

to limit the spreading of the virus, the warehouse also needs to improve its airflow system in

the warehouse because the virus spread into the air if it is in the enclosed spaces. In addition,

the covid pandemic could have the solution that the company needs to change the physical

warehouse by taking an advantage of investing in robots for automation in the warehouse,

which could increase the productivity and effectiveness in work as well as alleviate the rate of

transmission in case of people work in the warehouses. As a result, the company should change

its layout and design to protect the workers and it could cost the company a lot of money not

only in investing in the new warehouse but also in refurbishing the current warehouses.

c/ The new normal issues

The pandemic could cause changes in consumer behavior from shopping offline to

shopping online. Where most warehouses in Vietnam are applied the make-to-stock and need

to change to make-to-order, which causes the changes in trends of warehouse operation in

building necessary new fulfillment centers. Furthermore, shopping online through e-commerce

apps with a current capacity of warehouses in Vietnam could not provide fully and quickly in

order to meet the demands of the customers. On the other hand, cold storage with a view to

meeting the demands of the customer during the pandemic exploits the vital role of quality cold

storage in storing necessary demands such as food, vegetables, and water, especially vaccines

in case of an emergency situation like the social distance lasts for 14 days without going out.

Therefore, It could cost the company in order to change their current operational status of the

warehouse as well as prepare for the new business model with the uncertainty which brings

about the risk for the whole business if they do not forecast the customer behavior and the

trends carefully.

CHAPTER V: CONCLUSION

Thanks to the geographical characteristics, Can Tho could be seen as an important hub

between provinces. Due to its limitless potential for developing logistics networks, especially

in warehouse service. Nevertheless, during the research, we have found that there is drip-drop

service information posted on the websites, which is hard to collect the prime parameters of

their demand. Therefore, investors would hesitate when deciding on a venue. As a result, the

warehouse owners in Can Tho should enhance the website in order to attract clients.

Nguyen Ngoc Logistics (NNL) has achieved a highlighted reputation in logistics market

for its large servings for corporations such as Vinamilk, Coca Cola, Fuze Tea, etc. In addition,

the company also earns such comparative advantages as the location in Can Tho, high

investment in warehouse system and technology application. Nonetheless, there are challenges

remaining as the exclusive warehouse distribution and the lack of different types of warehouse

besides normal and cold ones. By 2025, Can Tho will become the gateway city of the lower

Mekong region when there is the national highway south of the Hau River developed. Hence,

Nguyen Ngoc Logistics should seize this opportunity to branch out their warehouse in Can Tho

as well as overcome the disadvantages.

It is undeniable that Covid-19 has impacted both sides throughout the supply chain,

warehouse service no exception; nevertheless, the pros overwhelm the cons. Although it is

estimated to spend a high cost for upgrading the warehouse, particularly the cold warehouse,

the tremendous growth of e-commerce and the adoption of robots could bring long-term

benefits and open the new era in warehouse operation. From an optimal perspective, the

epidemic illustrates the problem-solving and adoptable ability of human beings when there are

plenty of advanced solutions applied.
