PREFACE
Introduction to English for Science and Technology is a compile of materials and
documents related to basic language studies and study skills for all students at tertiary
levels and particularly for undergraduates attending BA. program of the studies of
English for Science and Technology at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
This collection of home-made units is advised for approximately 45 hours of classroom
instructions and twice as much time of self-studying. The course puts special emphasis
on developing learners’ ability to:

✓ Understand some fundamental concepts in English language studies such as

language areas, language elements, varieties of English, and other program-
related issues like assessment tools for learning together with general information
of career opportunities.

✓ Familiarize themselves and practice academic skills including note-taking,

generating & organizing ideas, and searching, validating sources and
presentation.

✓ Familiarize themselves and practice soft skills like time management, plan-making,
and teamwork.

Introduction to English for Science and Technology includes elements of task-based

language teaching and experiential learning approaches. Accordingly, students are
provided to a wide range of tasks; thus, they can establish and improve target skills
both academic and transferrable ones through task completion. The assessment for
learning is also based on task performance through group presentations and
individual portfolio. Teachers, then, play roles of facilitators and guides to support
students’ task fulfilment and motivate their self-regulatory activities.
