II. COURSE DESCRIPTION

2.1. POSITION OF THE COURSE IN THE PROGRAM:

English is an important working language for Science (Economics, Law, Political


Sciences, Psychology, Medicine, Public Health, Engineering,…), Internet, Sport,
Business, Travel, Broadcasting, Music, etc. The Ministry of High Education of the
Democratic Republic of Congo has decided to make it a transversal course because it
wants that the Congolese students become competitive on a global level given that
many scientific articles and books are published in English.

2.2. COURSE CONTENT

This course pertains to what is referred to as "English for specific purpose" whose
purpose is closely connected to language for professional purposes, where speakers of
English as a foreign or second language have to learn how to use language in areas
where they are going to work.

It focuses on the learner.


1. The study of languages for specific purposes (LSP) is highly student-centered,
focused on learners’ professional linguistic needs, as well as teaching materials
production.
2. In learner-centered approaches, course design and teaching often become
negotiated, dynamic processes, since needs, expectations and student
resources vary with each group.

III. COMPETENCES

3.1. GENERAL COMPETENCES

As for any language learning, BAC2 students should be able to master the four skills:
Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening.

3.2. PARTICULAR COMPETENCES

BAC2 students in Polytechnic Sciences should be able:

1) To read, understand and discuss short texts related to their domain of research.
2) To master and use technical terms contextually;
3) Make oral presentations and videos on topic related to their domain of research.

Grades will be assigned as follows:

Attendance, both regular and active: 10%


Assignments (oral and written): 20%
Quizzes (oral or written): 20%
Final examination: 50%

VII. RULES OF THE COURSE

The teaching language is ENGLISH.


Students are expected to attend classes and fully participate in all issues.
Students are expected to use their knowledge and general knowledge from other
courses, etc.
Students are expected to standby ethical values – Standards Relative to
Academic and Professional Integrity and will avoid any kind of plagiarism
(Wikipedia, Google, etc. copy−paste) and dishonesty (cheating);
Students are expected to hand in their papers in time to avoid being graded
negatively;
Students are required to work on take-home assignments, journals and group
assignments and hand them in time.
Students are required to have their own dictionaries (monolingual, bilingual,
technical).
Students are required to come in the classroom before the Assistant.
It is forbidden to laugh at friends who try to ask or answer questions.
The use of telephone in the classroom is prohibited.
