1.1. Overview of BA. in English for Science and Technology at Hanoi

1.2.1 General information:

Name of programme: BA. in English for Science and Technology

Level: Higher education

Field of study code: English Language Studies

Program code: 52220201 (FL1)

Types of Education: Full-time

Time of Education: 4 years (8 semesters, by standard); 3 or 5 years (by non-


standard)

Number of credits: 128 (compulsory)+6 (optional)

Qualification: Bachelor of Arts

1.2.2 Program aims & objectives:

According to HUST (2010), the BA. in English for Science and Technology programme
offered by Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam is aimed to train
and education undergraduates who:

- Have extensive background knowledge of the English Language Study


program, knowledge and professional skills (such as translation, interpretation,
teaching, research, or others) to well adapt to relevant careers in general
and those occupations related to English for Science and Technology in
particular accommodating socio-economic requirements in the trend of
international integration.
- Develop professional skills and personal qualities necessary to be successful in
careers.
- Establish social skills essential to work with efficacy in multi-disciplinary and
multi-national environment.

- Possess ethical, political qualities and good health to dedicate to the cause
of social development and national defense.
- Have capacity of:
• Translation, interpretation and other related positions at embassies,
governmental & non-governmental organizations, projects, or local &
foreign enterprises.
• Teaching English language at institutions such as schools, vocational &
academic colleges, and universities.
• Researching at institutes on language studies, science & technology, and
education.
• Furthering education to graduate levels.

Bachelors of Program of English for Science and Technology can enroll in other
institutional second-degree programs to be awarded Bachelors of English for
Science and Technology at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam.

1.2.3 Program outcomes & structural organization:

According to HUST (2017) and Lexicool (2007), bachelors in English for Science and
Technology are expected to achieve the program outcomes and completed the
standard of knowledge, skills and behaviors in program modules/courses listed

& 2nd foreign language.

(6) Have capacity to apply what has been studied and learnt in BA. in English for
Science and Technology into:

(i) making aware of social and environmental issues outside classrooms

(ii) using English language at level C1 (CEFL) or level 5 (Vietnam National


Reference Framework of Foreign Languages)

(iii) employing knowledge, skills into work using English for Science and
Technology

(iv) doing research and discovering knowledge related to English Language


Studies.

1.2.4 Forms of assessment

The BA. Program of English for Science and Technology is mainly based on formative
assessment. This type of assessment is to monitor student learning through ongoing
feedback given by themselves, peers and instructors. It helps instructors and faculties
to recognize students’ arising problems and address them throughout a course. In
addition, with such a low-stake assessment, students can identify their strengths,
weaknesses, and areas to be reviewed.

There are various types of formative assessment applied in different courses


(Carnegie Mellon University, 2015; English Oxford Living Dictionary, 2017; Clarke
University, 2017) in the Program, as listed below:

❖ Assignment: a task or piece of work allocated to someone as part of a job or


course of study.
❖ Quiz: An informal written test or examination given to students.
❖ Mini-test: A short written or spoken examination of a student's proficiency or
knowledge about some parts of program.
❖ Examination: A formal test of a student's knowledge or proficiency in a
subject or skill.
❖ Presentation: A speech or talk in which a new product, idea, or piece of work
is shown and explained to an audience.
❖ Portfolio: is a compilation of a student’s materials that exemplifies his/her
beliefs, skills, qualifications, education, training and experiences. It provides
insight into the personality and work ethic.
❖ Report: is a written document which provides clearly organized information
and/or data about a situation or problem under investigation.
❖ Project: A piece of research work undertaken by a student.

1.3. Brief of study skills for university (HUST_LMS)


University students need to equip themselves with the following study skills to prepare for
higher education:

- Learning more knowledge related to professions and other aspects of work and
life
- Studying effectively by planning study time per semester and weekly, especially
exams, portfolios, projects, or other assessment tools.
- Reading critically to increase active input and note-taking for later revision
together with further research
- Preparing for assessments throughout a course and whole curriculum by
arranging enough time, efforts and resources for exams, projects and others. (See
Handout 1 for more information).
