Unit 1 – Introduction
Objectives:
According to HUST (2010), the BA. in English for Science and Technology programme
offered by Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam is aimed to train
and education undergraduates who:
- Possess ethical, political qualities and good health to dedicate to the cause
of social development and national defense.
- Have capacity of:
• Translation, interpretation and other related positions at embassies,
governmental & non-governmental organizations, projects, or local &
foreign enterprises.
• Teaching English language at institutions such as schools, vocational &
academic colleges, and universities.
• Researching at institutes on language studies, science & technology, and
education.
• Furthering education to graduate levels.
Bachelors of Program of English for Science and Technology can enroll in other
institutional second-degree programs to be awarded Bachelors of English for
Science and Technology at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam.
According to HUST (2017) and Lexicool (2007), bachelors in English for Science and
Technology are expected to achieve the program outcomes and completed the
standard of knowledge, skills and behaviors in program modules/courses listed
below:

The BA. Program of English for Science and Technology is mainly based on formative
assessment. This type of assessment is to monitor student learning through ongoing
feedback given by themselves, peers and instructors. It helps instructors and faculties
to recognize students’ arising problems and address them throughout a course. In
addition, with such a low-stake assessment, students can identify their strengths,
weaknesses, and areas to be reviewed.
- Learning more knowledge related to professions and other aspects of work and
life
- Studying effectively by planning study time per semester and weekly, especially
exams, portfolios, projects, or other assessment tools.
- Reading critically to increase active input and note-taking for later revision
together with further research
- Preparing for assessments throughout a course and whole curriculum by
arranging enough time, efforts and resources for exams, projects and others. (See
Handout 1 for more information).
