PREPARATION OF ETHENE (from ethanol)
OBJECTIVE
To observe how ethene is formed from ethanol and what is used to identify when the change
occurs and how acid and alcohol react to form alkene and how we can test the result. It's
overall supposed to help us to understand the theory that we have learnt in class.
MATERIALS USED
1. Instruments used
• measuring cylinder
• Beaker
• Test tube
• Spatula
2. Chemicals used
• ½ powdered KMnO4
• 10ml ethanol
• 10ml H2SO4
PROCEDURE
1. We added 10ml of 70% ethanol into a beaker
2. Then we mixed it with another 10 ml of concentrated sulphuric acid.
3. Finally, we added potassium permanganate which is used to test if the reaction
occurred.
4. It took around two minutes to show result
5. Its powdered so it left a bit of a sediment
OBSERVATION
After we added the potassium permanganate it slowly started to decolorize, since we used
powdered KMnO4 it took a little longer and left a sediment that wasn’t used up in the
reaction. It's an exothermic reaction so it released heat which made the beaker warm, when a
reaction occurs it either releases heat or decolorizes and this reaction showed both. Changes
the color of baeyer’s reagent from its original violet color to color less or simply decolorize
it.
• As you can see below it slowly decolorizes forming all ranges of colors from violet to brown
and finally clear

RESULT and DISCUSSION

It's an exothermic reaction that creates unsaturated hydrocarbon (ethene). If we add KMnO 4
to ethene it will form ethanediol and if we are dehydrating it, it will finally give ethanol. The
Baeyer's reagent is used to test if there is unsaturated hydrocarbon in the product which tasted
right by decolorizing.
It took 2 minutes to decolorize and still left sediment since we used powdered KMnO 4.
