The entire airplane structure has been divided into

zones numbered from one to twenty. Each major com-
ponent af the airplane-such as wing, fuselage,
empennage, etc.-is treated in a separate section of
the book, and each section is headed by an Index
Drawing which calls out the zones included in that
particular companent. Each zone is then, within the
section, illustrated in detail by a drawing depicting
typical damage to the structure. This is the Zone Draw- ZONE 18

follows:
Elevator 5 inch-pounds
Rudders 35 inch-pounds (This includes 30 inch-pounds
designed underbalance)
Ailerons 0 inch-pounds

After any sizeable repairs, which necessitate removing the

surface from the airplane, check the static balance before
remounting the surface on the airplane. Prior to making
a balance check, surfaces must be completely assembled
and finished with all balance' weights, hinge fittings, trim
or booster tabs, and trim or booster tab operating rods in
place.
b. ALLOWABLE REPAIR WEIGHT.-The allowable
amount of repair weight which may be added to a control
surface in the form of repairs, before addition oJ counter-
weight becomes necessary, amounts to 5 inch-pounds, in
the case of the elevator and rudders. No underbalance is
permitted for the ailerons. Repair weight causing under-
balance beyond allowable limits must be compensated for ADDITIONAL

FABRIC REPAIR

The only fabric members on the P-5IH Airplane are the

aerodynamic seals on the control surfaces. Complete instruc-
tions for fabric repair are contained in section XIII of AN
OI-IA-I, second edition of General Manual for Structural
Repair.

Section VIII
EXTRUSION CHART
1. GENERAL.
The repair of damaged stringers, longerons, spar caps and miscellaneous stiffener mem-
bers frequently requires extruded sections_ as reinforcement or replacement members.
These extrusions are identified in this Handbook by their NA standard numbers, the
second figure of which is always "E." Where no NA number exists, the extrusion is iden-
tified by the Alcoa die number. The letter "T" which is suffixed to all NA standard
extrusion numbers indicates the heat-treated material. The material specification of all
extrusions is AAF Specification No. QQ-A-354, used to denote 24ST aluminum alloy.
All numbers with a "K" or "L" prefix are Alcoa die numbers.
2. SUBSTITUTES.
Some types of extrusions may be unavailable for repairs and, in such instances, rolled-up
sections of sheet stock may be fabricated and used as substitutes. These substitutes may be
formed by a power brake, hand brake or by a soft mallet and blocks of wood held firmly
in a vise. While forming the substitute sections, carefully avoid making the radii sharper
than specified- in the illustrations.
3. RESTRICTIONS ON USE OF ROLLED SUBSTITUTES FOR EXTRUSIONS.
In the case of an insertion repair where a section of the original stringer is to be
duplicated, the use of a rolled section to replace an extruded member must be limited to
lengths not exceeding 10 percent of the total original stringer length. However, the use
of rolled substitutes for extruded repair members is always acceptable as given in the
following charts. -
Note
In combat areas, stripping cracked-up aircraft will yield quantities of extrusions
for use as repair stock. Use the illustrated rolled-up substitutes only where it is
impossible to obtain extrusions.
4. HEAT-TREAT.
All 24S0 material must be heat-treated in accordance with instructions given in the
General Manual for Structural Repair, AN OI-IA-I.
