OGL 343: Social Processes in Organizations

To begin, I had a few ideas regarding what we could do for the group project. I wanted to
choose something that could resonate with each member somehow as I think that is what will
produce the best work in the end. After careful thought, I determined that my idea would be
about human trafficking/sex trafficking. Although I am the only woman in the group, all of my
teammates have wives, daughters, mothers or all. It may not be as much of a threat to men,
although it does happen, but it affects people very close to each member of the team.
1. Social justice interests me the most. I think each area including health and environment
have important topics to me but I automatically gravitate toward social justice. I
especially wanted to focus on advocacy for women and children as this relates to me
most as a woman and someone who has young brothers, sisters, and cousins.
2. The issue my organization is most concerned with is bringing awareness to the dangers
of human trafficking. All over the world and in the United States, this issue has been
brushed over throughout the years and in many cases because people in power are
affiliated with these horrific trafficking rings. My organization strives to spread the word
on what human trafficking is, what it looks like, and things to watch out for to stay safe.
3. My organization will first off make more people aware of what happens when someone is
taken for human trafficking, who is at risk, where this is taking place most often, and how
to protect yourself. I hope that with spreading this information to people of all sexes and
age ranges that I can educate people enough to safe them from potentially becoming a
victim.
4. My public campaign would be primarily on social media and start with interviewing
people who have come out publicly about beign victims. We could start a TikTok account
including different resources for information on the topic, short clips to educate, and
include those interviews of real stories of trafficking. After getting traction, we can ask for
volunteers to go give short presentation to highschools or at other public venues. On our
social medias, we can start a website open to donations, to which each donor will
receive a card and bracelet with our slogan. All donations will go towards mobilization of
volunteers and any future cost incurring events.
5. My slogan would be “GET LOUD” with a subtitle of “end human trafficking”. I think this is
a quick but catchy slogan that is easy to remember and directly reflects what our
organization is about; getting the word out on human trafficking.
6. The target audience is everyone because whether someone is a direct threat to be
victimized or not, they likely have someone close to them that is. However, I would say
my biggest target is women and young girls under 25. Many victims are under 18
especially.

There were all good ideas brought to the table and discussed by the group members. It was
really encouraging to see so many passionate and thought out ideas by everyone. The one that
caught my attention the most was Cody’s and Lance’s but since we chose Cody’s I will go over
Lances. He explained that there is not enough people recycling and we are filling our landfills
with items that could be reused. He suggested starting a campaign to make recycling more
encouraged and accessible to students on campus. He suggest starting a community center
where it is easy for students to recycle and in return they would get credit for the items they turn
in.

The idea we ended up going with was Cody Millers idea, which is an organization to support
veterans and first responders. This would be called “First Line Farms” and the slogan would be
“putting those first who place us first”. Veterans and first responders all over the U.S suffer from
severe mental health issues including anxiety, depression, and what Cody emphasized, PTSD.
This organization would target those who have served in the United States armed forces and
first responders including police officers and fire fighters. Cody served in Afghanistan and came
back to his life completely changed. This social issue resonates with him closely which is why
he chose it. The group really enjoyed the idea and had family members that they could relate to
this issue through. First Line Farms is basically farms where these people can come to do “earth
work” and find a sense of purpose. It is difficult for veterans and first responders suffering so
badly with mental illnesses to assimilate back to normal life and first line farms allows them to
connect back with the earth, find greater purpose, and find peace and relaxation. This
organization would also offer mental health services if participants desired.

One key dynamic that I noticed immediately was our ability to ask each other questions. Not
only were we able to ask them, each member proved that they could field and them and even
use that as a medium to improve their work moving forward. We obviously do not know each
other but opened ourselves up to questioning so others could learn more, which made our
Zoom meeting even more fruitful. For example, I asked Cody why he thinks First Line Farms
could help all veterans and first responders or where did that information come from/ is it
backed up with any evidence. He thanked me for the question and said that he appreciated it
because it made him think of something he should include in his presentation. That kind of led
into a line of questions from all members to each other which created a lot of great discussion. I
think this will continue to be a great quality we can use as we move toward the final project.
Overall, I am eager to continue working with my team and create a solid and successful final
project with First Line Farms.
